We are looking for an experienced and passionate Analytical Chemist to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our bold Quality Control team based in Västerås, Sweden. By joining us, you will be a key player in developing inspection methods for new raw materials and intermediate products, have an active role in establishing a centre of analytical expertise for battery materials analysis and characterisation within the heart of Northvolt’s R&D and pilot battery production site, and consequently contribute towards building the first large scale European battery factories.

About the job

As Analytical Chemist in our team, you will primarily be responsible to lead the development and validation of characterisation methods for a group of raw materials and intermediate products utilised/produced in our various battery cell production lines. With your analytical expertise, you will also have the chance to participate regularly in production investigations, failure analysis activities as well as work closely with our R&D teams to support with the inspections of next-generation battery materials and upcoming battery cell formats. We are looking for someone that enjoys working in the laboratory, has a hands-on approach to their tasks as well as can effectively collaborate across group boundaries to find answers and solutions to problems.

About the team

Together with several further analytical chemists and quality control engineers you will be part of the technical development team within our wider Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs. Our QC team, currently composed of 25 dedicated laboratory technicians, analytical chemists and engineers, is working on all aspects of quality inspections and cell production investigations. You will have access to a fully equipped laboratory with high-end analytical instruments that cover both chemical and mechanical analyses. You will play a key role in building up analytical expertise and materials characterisation competences within the team and the wider company.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive the development, validation and implementation of new analytical methods for raw materials, intermediates and finished products.
  • Responsible for developing quality standards, procedures and documentation associated with the analytical and laboratory work.
  • Run analytical testing on a range of instruments including interpretating, reviewing and reporting data/results to our internal customers.
  • Responsible to maintain a set of analytical instruments to a high standard, train and share knowledge on instruments and methods with other team members.
  • Drive operational excellence by being a key player in day-to-day problem solving and process improvement exercises.
  • Understand and internalize QA/QC principles in everyday functions.
  • Contribute to 8D production investigations as well as the characterisation of next generation battery materials.
  • Work across many parts of the organisation, collaborating with production technology, production quality, supplier/customer quality, Revolt and R&D teams.
  • Work with external suppliers, institutes and academic organizations as well as customers.

Skills & Requirements


  • PhD (or MSc with 5+ years of experience in a laboratory) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Natural Sciences or Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in R&D, quality control or an analytical laboratory in a relevant industry, e.g. Li-ion battery materials, polymers, inorganic materials, pharmaceutical, food or paper industries is preferred.
  • Experience in analytical chemistry is a must.
  • Proven track record of performing method development and validation projects in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in polymer chemistry or battery materials (binder, graphite, silicon) is a plus.
  • Hands-on expertise in the following analytical techniques Rheology, DSC, TGA, FT-IR, BET, DLS, is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable in quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM as well as Lean and six sigma.
  • Familiar with SPC, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem-solving methodology
