  • Get Matched: Apply and get matched with a VFA startup partner in your area of interest.

  • Get Immersed: Spend 3 months in this role, during which you will be immersed in the local context, receive training from expert mentors, and get to understand market nuances.

  • Get Working: Work on real project deliverables for your assigned startups while being paid a stipend. Final projects will be presented to the startup team, and you will receive feedback.

  • Get Hired: While full-time roles are not guaranteed, you are fast-tracked through ordinary application processes for available full-time roles with the startup post the fellowship



Startup Partner: Sokowatch

Sokowatch is transforming communities across Africa by revolutionizing access to essential goods and services. By connecting small merchants to the digital economy, we fix inefficient supply chains and provide services previously unavailable to informal businesses. Sokowatch aims to provide everything a retailer needs, no wholesalers or banks necessary.

Project Description

Sokowatch is seeking an entrepreneurial young professional who can combine best practices from the product development field with data visualization and SQL skills to assist in developing its business analytics capabilities.

Project Responsibilities

  1. Data Analysis

    1. Collect and structure data

    2. Categorize data and come up with actionable segments

    3. Own product usage and feedback data

  2. Instrumentation

    1. Provide recommendations on events to track

    2. Own analytics tools

    3. Work closely with Product Managers to ensure features have a well-defined data section in PRDs

  3. Planning and running experiments

    1. Design experiments to reduce value risk
    2. For e.g. should the team focus on the checkout process

    3. Work with the support and training team to ensure successful rollouts

  4. Interpreting data

    1. Extract information that will be useful towards the development of existing products

    2. Provide data to engineering and business audiences to help them understand Sokowatch's customers better

Reports to: Head of Product, East Africa

Skills & Requirements

  • Proficiency with Tableau, SQL, Excel, and statistical methods (Python an added plus)
  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in Computer Science, Math, Statistics, or Economics (Master's degree a plus)
  • 3+ years of experience in data analysis, consulting, finance, or other quantitatively rigorous roles
  • Ability to balance priorities, clarify stakeholder requirements, pay keen attention to detail, and generally keep deliverables on schedule
  • Ability to communicate technical details clearly and concisely to management & external stakeholders
  • Entrepreneurial drive to take ownership for assigned product strategy and execution to achieve growth goals
  • A strong combination of analytical and communication skills – Ability to create product strategy from stakeholder analysis
