The Quality Control team at Northvolt Labs in Västerås, Sweden, is looking for an experienced and passionate Technical Programs Manager to lead and drive the development and continuous improvement of materials characterisation methods within the Quality Control team. You will be in charge of leading an enthusiastic and bold team of engineers and chemists, driving the development, validation and implementation of new analytical methods and building up core competences within the team both with regards to chemical and mechanical characterisation techniques of battery materials and components. You will be reporting to the Quality Control Manager.

The Quality Control team supports all parts of the Northvolt Labs Campus, from the Cathode Active Material and Battery Cell production lines, R&D teams to battery validation and recycling teams. You will be working intimately with all units to ensure the successful characterisation and quality control of materials and components of several R&D and production process steps.

Specifically, you have worked several years in an analytical laboratory and have previous experience in managing a team of scientists. You have a proven track record of leading and driving method development and validation projects, and a deep understanding of a wide range of analytical instruments and characterisation techniques, such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, GC-MS, IC, BET, DLS, DSC, TGA, titrations, SEM/EDX and mechanical testing of materials. This includes experience in maintaining, troubleshooting state-of-the-art analytical instruments, as well as interpreting and reporting results.

We are looking for a candidate that is analytical and logical with an ability to identify opportunities and improvements to drive increased quality through data driven approaches. The candidate should also have strong technical abilities in order to succeed in this role.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive the development, validation and implementation of new analytical methods for raw materials, intermediates and finished products.
  • Manage a team of engineers and chemists and their associated technical projects as well as lead and drive the interpretation and reporting of data/results.
  • Drive operational excellence by being a key player in day-to-day problem solving and process improvement exercises.

  • Understand and internalize QA/QC principles in every day functions.

  • Contribute to 8D production investigations as well as the characterisation of next generation battery materials.
  • Work across many parts of the organisation, collaborating with Production, R&D, Process engineering and Quality.
  • Work with external suppliers, institutes and academic organizations as well as customers.

Skills & Requirements


  • PhD (or MSc with 5+ years of experience in a laboratory) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Natural Sciences or Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in R&D, quality control or an analytical laboratory in a relevant industry, e.g. Li-ion battery materials, Inorganic materials, Pharmaceutical, Food or Paper industries.
  • Experience in analytical chemistry is a must.
  • 2+ years of experience managing a team.

  • Proven track record of leading method development and validation projects in a laboratory environment.

  • Project management skills.
  • Knowledgeable in quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM as well as Lean and six sigma.
  • Proven track record in statistical and measurement system analysis (MSA).
  • Familiar with SPC, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem-solving methodology

  • Must have worked in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Curious, technically educated and preferably with a strong business background.
