F-Secure delivers research-led cyber security to defend organizations, society and people from real-world attacks and build resilience into their approach. Our people are a mix of technical and creative experts – diverse, talented, and passionate people – working tirelessly to help us advance the industry with new ways of thinking. They lead their own development, in and out of the office. They call the shots when it comes to building a place to call home in our organization.

Are you hoping to shift gears into cyber security? This could be exactly what you are looking for! Our consulting team is growing, and we are looking to recruit systems engineers or software developers with a keen interest in security, to work alongside our security consultants to lend engineering expertise to better resolve our client’s security problems. This position is open in our London, Manchester and Basingstoke offices.

We solve complex cyber-security problems on daily basis and encourage our team to push the boundaries of what is possible! In addition to their work supporting our clients, our consultants get involved in a variety of exciting external and internal research projects - investigating new software, hardware or protocols, or developing new tools and techniques. Just check out our labs page – https://labs.f-secure.com/

To succeed at F-Secure and help our clients with their challenges you will need to be geared up with the following:

A passion for security! You love computers, you love security and you love hacking things and solving problems. If this weren’t your job it would be your hobby.

Self-motivation! You’re not going to be told what to do all the time. You are capable of figuring out what is of benefit to F-Secure and our clients and then run with it. We will give you the tools to succeed, but it is up to you to apply them.

Communication skills! How can we add value to our clients’ organizations unless we can communicate what they need to do to improve their security? But communication also extends to sharing your knowledge with your colleagues and the wider industry.

What we need…

We are looking for someone with a keen and demonstrable interest in security, with experience architecting, developing or implementing systems and solutions in the real world. You’ll have experience overcoming engineering challenges, helping the business make sensible compromises to achieve the core business objectives, and collaborate with others to achieve that.

We’re looking for someone who’s a fast learner, who gets excited by getting stuck into new tools and technologies, and who enjoys applying their experience to new problem spaces. As part of your role, you’ll be working alongside a passionate and dedicated team, including collaborating on new and exciting projects for a wide range of clients. You’ll also have the freedom to explore your own personal research projects on bleeding edge technologies.

Core responsibilities

  • Provide tailored, pragmatic security advice at any level within a client’s organization to support their business objectives.
  • Collaborate with other consultants and client staff on security engineering projects to improve a client’s security posture.
  • Support security solutions implementation and secure development lifecycle improvement within our clients
  • Design programmes of work for our clients to meet their security objectives.

  • Contribution to research and tool development, both internally and across the broader security community

  • Translating that research and tool development into internal and externally facing output, such as blog posts, conference talks, open-source tool releases and so on.

Who we think would be a great fit…

We are looking for someone with a strong background in engineering real-world solutions:

  • Strong computer science, software engineering and/or systems administration knowledge
  • Proficient in at least one programming or scripting language, such as Python, Go, Java or Bash or PowerShell scripting
  • A demonstrable interest in security, and a passion for pursuing it further.
  • Experience working with modern DevOps methodologies.
  • Exposure to modern development practices, such as Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD
  • Experience working with at least one of the major cloud providers: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud
  • A willingness to travel to clients for up to 50% of your time, pandemic permitting.
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and spoken English, and the ability to communicate technical topics clearly to non-technical parts of an organization.

Bonus Points…

Any of the below will be a bonus, but are not required:

  • Previous consulting experience
  • Deep understanding of security principles, and/or a history of security-focused work
  • Prior experience working with any of the following technologies: Kubernetes, Terraform, CloudFormation, Hashicorp Sentinel, GitLab
  • Cloud certifications, for instance AWS Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, AWS Certified Security Specialty, Azure Administrator/Developer Associate, Azure Solutions Architect Expert etc.
  • Contributions to open-source projects, especially if security focused.

What you will get from us

We will invest in your development, by offering you a variety of training and tools in the areas you are particularly interested in:

  • 1 to 1 coaching and tutorship sessions led by seasoned and well-respected professionals.
  • Access to our state-of-the-art bespoke training platform.
  • You will also receive classroom-based learning sessions and be given the opportunity to attend external training courses and security conferences.
  • We will also fund accreditations and certifications such as (but not limited to): OSCP, OSEP, CRT, CSPA, GIAC or those offered by the cloud providers. That's up to you though, certifications are not a barrier to entry and they aren't a mandate for our people as they progress either.
