Senior Engineering Manager for Omni

About Omni
Omni is a new way to experience the news, and it’s already one of Sweden's leading and largest news destination. It is both an editorial and a technological innovation: At Omni, editorial staff, engineers, sales, and readers work closely together to create the best news experience that we know how.

We’re happy to say that Omni has won some prestigious awards like Sweden's best news service (IDG/Topp-100 in 2020), and Europe's best news app before that (Wanifra Digital Media Award), but our biggest reward remains that over a million people choose to get their news from Omni every month.

We run Omni as its own company within Schibsted, a family of many well-known businesses in Scandinavia such as Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet. Although we primarily organize around each company, altogether we are hundreds of engineers all working towards the same goals. That way, we can offer both the autonomy of a small startup and the community of a large company.

About the role
As our head of engineering and an engineering manager in Schibsted, you’ll utilize your combined technical background and leadership skills to build, develop and maintain a high performing team. We’re a team of 9 engineers, 2 UXers and a product manager, and we want to keep things nimble, so in Omni the “senior” part of the role won’t be to manage managers, but to join our leadership team in Omni and run the company with us.

Specifically, we’ll look to you for leadership in three areas:

People Leadership
We’re counting on you to actively work on attracting, hiring and retaining people to your team and the organisation. And they’re counting on you to set clear expectations and help them grow.

Organizational Leadership
As an engineering manager in Omni, the most important thing you develop will not be code, but a high-performing team of engineers. And as a part of Schibsted, you will work with other engineering managers to make our teams stronger together.

Technical Leadership
Your team already kicks ass, so we don’t need you to dive deep into every detail (but we’ll be happy if you can). Most importantly, as our technical leader, we want you to see the big picture of how everything fits together, and how we work as a team, and help us make it even better.

We’re a cross-functional leadership team in Omni, and we’re pretty tech-savvy, but when you join us, we will look to you to be our voice on all things technology, and own it with confidence.

To be successful in this role, you need to have the ability to:

  • communicate effectively with your team and its stakeholders, and make complex ideas easy to understand
  • understand how to utilize the knowledge and skills in others to solve complex problems
  • listen actively and turn information into actions
  • build trust and influence positively
  • think strategically and act tactically
  • remain positive and motivate others

This is a key role for us, so we’re looking for someone who already knows how to run a high-performing team, and with a strong understanding of technology. In return, we can offer you amazing growth opportunities on the business and organization side of things, because we -- the leadership team in Omni -- plan on running the company with you.
