Northvolt Zwei in Braunschweig has an exciting job offer for a Software Engineer (m/f/d) in our new Edge Team within our digitalization department at the new gigafactory in Germany.
You will be contributing in your area from the very start in building one of the first large scale European battery factories, which will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. This is a greenfield project in a complex field, which requires a combination of proven technologies and design of new innovative solutions.
We are building up our Edge Team which will be responsible to deliver monitoring, traceability and control for every machine in the factory and our connected devices. The data we collect monitors and drives our production process and provides a live report on how every cell is manufactured.
You will collaborate closely with the Edge Team of Sweden and teams from automation, control, materials flow, factory design, software engineering and machine learning to understand how the machine is built, what its software interface looks like and how to get the data we need.
You help us to design, test and implement software systems for a highly automated production process. To support this we need to keep the applications and operating systems on a large fleet of connected computers up-to-date.
Our software is primarily written in Go and we open source software like https://github.com/gopcua/opcua. We require some basic understanding of concurrency, distributed systems and eventual consistency but you don’t have to be an expert. We value passion, curiosity and willingness to learn on the job and teach you what you need to know.
You know how to explain your ideas to your peers and like to find solutions to complex problems. You are comfortable to work independently and value the support you get from the team. You are comfortable to challenge the status quo since we don’t have all the answers either.
This is a unique job opportunity that does not exist anywhere else on the continent. The combination of Northvolt’s position, the team, the approach and the mission make this different than other jobs in the field.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The Person (m/f/d) we are looking for is goal oriented, curious and eager to learn. You will get the chance to have a real impact on our success story in Germany and see the results of your work. Our organization requires and values great self-discipline and a natural talent to make things happen.

Newly renovated office in city center.
Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration. Once completed, it will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory and produce 32 GWh worth of capacity annually.
We are currently in an exciting fast-growing phase and operate in a busy, fast moving environment, dealing with a wide range of stakeholders. We are staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We are also preparing for upcoming positions at the main factory, Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå and Northvolt Zwei in Germany.
The Northvolt–Volkswagen Group joint venture is establishing a gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett. Start of construction is planned for 2021 and start of operations beginning of 2024. Initial annual output will be at least 16 GWh.
