  • Applications are considered on a rolling basis
  • Västerås

Northvolt's Research and Development Laboratory (RDL) executes the fabrication of new, novel lithium ion batteries as designed by our world class Cell Design Team. We are literally the first step in building and evaluating the next generation of lithium ion technology.

This position is key to keeping the RDL operating smoothly while engaging in continuous improvements. The RDL is a complex set of overlapping and intertwined operations, all bundled into a fascinating facility of assembly robots and machinery, vacuum and high pressure systems, dry and clean rooms, chillers and condensers, and hazardous chemicals. You will not be bored.

RDL is in search of a talented, experienced Project Manager for Facility and Maintenance to handle the following as key ownership items in addition to other smaller responsibilities:

  • Facilities Maintenance Management. Maintenance is (mostly) performed by a dedicated company maintenance team, but requires coordination, structure, and scheduling to properly address all the services and repairs which are required from such a complex operation.
    • Develop and manage the facilities maintenance schedule to ensure safe and reliable equipment/system operation.
    • Act as the key liaison with the landlord for all building facilities issues.
  • Improvements and Upgrades Ownership and Oversight. Due to the complex nature of the operations coupled with changing technical product requirements, the facility is consistently in need of various renovations, upgrades, and equipment installation and commissioning support.
    • Own and drive construction and modification projects.
    • Assess and document project requirements.
    • Obtain quote(s) from contractors, and ensure that they meet LPTA (lowest price/technically acceptable) standards.
    • Oversee the construction activities and engage in active project cost control.
  • Assist in, or possibly lead the requirements for and execution of RDL’s future laboratory facility.
    • Ensure the future facility is properly designed to meet all technical requirements based on your newly-gained technical knowledge of current operations.
    • Oversee a significant portion of the build.
    • Manage the commissioning of and move into the new facility (currently targeted for 2022).

Minimum Requirements

  • Proven experience in facilities and/or maintenance management or operations.
  • Experience in managing construction, reconstruction, or major maintenance efforts, within time and budget.
  • Project management experience. Ability to create and manage budgets and create project timelines (you secretly love Gantt charts).
  • Basic hands-on skills for smaller projects and efforts. You can use power tools, know how to do various small repairs, and are mainly not afraid to “get your hands dirty.” Put another way, you have the knowledge, skill set, and judgement not to contract out for simple tasks and just get it done yourself when it is faster, cheaper, and better that way.
  • Can make and manage floor plans (and preferably construction drawings).
  • Excellent command of both Swedish and English. Northvolt is a multi-cultural company, and English is the company language. Swedish is of course the native language of almost all the contractors and service companies. You must be extremely proficient in both.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Proven experience managing projects up to 5M SEK.
  • Strong working knowledge of code requirements for electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and/or structures.
  • Experience with laboratories and/or clean rooms of any type.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our two gigafactories: Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden, and Northvolt Zwei in Salzgitter, Germany.   We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.

Join us today. Together, let’s enable the future of energy!
