Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a Design Engineer (m/f/d) to join our passionate team in Braunschweig. You will be working on the design for our Northvolt factories, frequent travels will be part of your work.

In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in building one of the first large scale European battery factories. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society.

As a Design Engineer (m/f/d) you will work on the technical scope for the Northvolt Zwei Clean and Dry room EPC package being integrated into the large-scale battery factory being built in Salzgitter, Germany. Your responsibilities will cover the review and technical acceptance of design deliverables being produced by Northvolt’s third party clean and dry room contractor. A central part of your job will be to coordinate contractors, consultants and internal design resources in the design phase. Furthermore, you will support in decisions and technical know how during execution phase of Northvolt Zwei.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working with internal and external partners, to ensue technical compliance with the appropriate standards during the design, procurement and execution of the dry and clean rooms.
  • Work in collaboration and cooperation with the internal Northvolt engineers for an integrated and coordinated design of the clean and dry rooms.
  • Review the proposed designs from Northvolt suppliers and provide feedback to ensure technical quality requirements are met whilst ensuring maximum possible cost savings.
  • Attend frequent meetings with suppliers and clearly communicate Northvolt requirements.
  • Scrutinize Northvolt’s own internal design requirements to ensure practical requirements are placed on third party suppliers.
  • Work with the Northvolt construction team to ensure design integrity throughout installation.

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

  • A relevant university degree (B.Sc. / M.Sc. or similar). Engineering degree preferred but not required.
  • 5+ years working experience of clean & dry room design and construction.
  • Preferably experienced with working on large fast paced building/EPC projects.
  • Experience of C&D requirements in the battery, electronics, pharma, labs or food industries.

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Technically focused with ability to scrutinize clean and dry room designs and provide constructive feedback for improvements
  • Excellent English written and oral skills, Swedish/German is a plus.
  • Highly organized and result-driven.
  • Proactive and goes beyond expectations.
  • Exceptionally good negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Has a “can do” attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit.

About the company

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration. Once completed, it will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory and produce 32 GWh worth of capacity annually.

We are currently in an exciting fast-growing phase and operate in a busy, fast moving environment, dealing with a wide range of stakeholders. We are staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We are also preparing for upcoming positions at the main factory, Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå and Northvolt Zwei in Germany.

The Northvolt–Volkswagen Group joint venture is establishing a gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett. Start of construction is planned for 2021 and start of operations beginning of 2024. Initial annual output will be at least 16 GWh.​
