The Claes Isacson Scholarship

Against the background of Claes Isacson’s engagement in and commitment to the shipping and marine insurance industries during his entire working life, and his particular focus on internal education and training through the establishment of the Gard Academy, the intention is that the scholarship shall help young people to finance an education at university level with a view to finding work within the shipping and marine insurance sectors.

The Claes Isacson Scholarship is awarded annually and amounts to USD 20,000 which may be awarded to one student or split between several students.

The application deadline is 1 April 2020.

Skills & Requirements

Who can apply

  • The applicant must be 18 years of age or older and must have commenced studies at a university or equivalent educational institution focusing on subjects related to, or of importance to, the shipping industry and/or the marine insurance business.
  • The applicant must present a plan for the completion of his/her studies and set out to what extent the scholarship will be used for the purpose of financing a special project or course being part of the education programme he/she has already commenced.
  • The applicant must provide certified copies of exam certificates from that part of the education programme(s) at university level or equivalent educational institution he/she already has completed.
  • The applicant should outline future career plans and desribe the extent to which he/she wishes to work in the shipping and marine insurance business.
  • The Scholarship is open to students from any country.
  • The Scholarship Committee will interview selected applicants before announcing the winner of the Scholarship.

Terms and conditions

The Scholarship will be awarded in two tranches. The first tranche will be paid into a nominated bank account upon verification of enrolment in the awardee’s chosen course, and the second and final tranche will be paid into the same account at the start of the awardee’s second semester. To retain eligibility for the Scholarship, we will require that the awardee adhere to the following terms and conditions:

  • Remain eligible for enrolment, and be enrolled, in the course of study and at the university referenced in the initial application. Proof of enrolment must be provided before any payment is made.
  • Maintain a satisfactory standard of academic progress. Awardees must attain the minimum pass level for each subject as required by the course program.
  • Comply with any requests for information required by the Gard Scholarship Committee.
  • On completion of the course program, submit a report to Gard’s Scholarship Committee summarising the benefits of receiving the award and how the Scholarship funds were spent.
  • Confirm that the statements made in the scholarship application are and remain true and correct. Any misrepresentation or omission of fact in the application is cause for disqualification and termination of the award.
  • Failure to meet the conditions of eligibility for the Scholarship is cause for disqualification and termination of the award. If the award is terminated, the awardee may be required to repay to Gard P. & I. (Bermuda) Ltd., in part or in total, any monies that have been paid.
  • Provide a letter of acceptance of the Scholarship, acknowledging awardee’s intent to use the Scholarship funds, and confirm that you have read and agree to the above terms and conditions and understand the extent of your obligations to Gard P. & I. (Bermuda) Ltd.
