Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a process engineer (m/f/d) to initially join our bold project team in Germany, where we start production within the next few years.In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in building one of the first large scale European battery factories.

As a process engineer (m/f/d) you will be a part of a fast growing team and a part of setting up and executing the long term process strategy for our Northvolt Zwei plant.

The process engineer (m/f/d) will be an expert in one or several defined process areas which includes deep knowledge in process design, equipment handling, maintenance planning and control design etc. You will play an important role to interface equipment suppliers and to collaborate with Northvolt factory design teams to efficiently integrate the equipment into the process.

Each step require a high level of accuracy and high throughput to assure a lean process flow. Experience of the battery manufacturing industry is important as you will be covering the process design of one or several of the following areas; slurry mixing, coating, calendaring, slitting vacuum drying, cell assembly and formation.

The work location will be in Braunschweig initially and later on transfer to the production site where we start production within the next few years.This position requires (in the beginning) frequent travels to Sweden where you will be working closely with experienced engineers. You will be a part of the process technology knowledge transfer between the production units.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Drive the delivery of a fully functional manufacturing process.
  • Implement the process plan and establish processes for metrics and goals.
  • Work in close cooperation and set up interfaces successful alignment with construction, environmental, supply-chain and other work streams.
  • FATs, installations, commissioning, SATs and improvements.
  • Sustain and improve process yield.
  • Become the go-to-person for your process step.
  • Establish process metrics and goals.
  • Finalize the process windows and DFMEA with RD and QA team.

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

  • MSc or PhD degree in Physics/Industrial/Electrical/Engineering.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience within high volume production field (preferably battery manufacturing).
  • Experienced with DOE and SPC.
  • Six sigma training (with green belt certificate).

  • Experienced with DFMEA and QA troubleshooting tools.

  • Successful track record of leading process improvement projects in production factory.

  • Experience from scaling production in a fast-growing environment ideally in the battery manufacturing industry.

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent English written and oral skills, Swedish/German is a plus.
  • Highly organized and result-driven.
  • Proactive and goes beyond expectations.
  • Exceptionally good negotiation and problem-solving skills.

About the company

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration. Once completed, it will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory and produce 32 GWh worth of capacity annually.

We are currently in an exciting fast-growing phase and operate in a busy, fast moving environment, dealing with a wide range of stakeholders. We are staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We are also preparing for upcoming positions at the main factory, Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå and Northvolt Zwei in Germany.

The Northvolt–Volkswagen Group joint venture is establishing a gigafactory in Salzgitter, Germany. Northvolt Zwei takes its design from the Northvolt blueprint for battery manufacturing developed for Northvolt Ett. Start of construction is planned for 2021 and start of operations beginning of 2024. Initial annual output will be at least 16 GWh.​
