As a lighter at ILP you are the hub connecting everything from animation to FX and compositing. It is your responsibility that everything comes together and that the end result looks as good as it possibly can. The role is very diverse and we value a problem solving attitude, initiative and a structured way of working equally high as a great artistic eye.

In addition to the traditional lighting tasks we expect all our lighters to be able to do basic modelling and lookdev as well as slap compositing of their shots. A basic understanding of the entire VFX pipeline is also important as it helps in communicating effectively with the other disciplines. The constant communication between artists is something we feel strongly about, both for spawning creative ideas and for solving problems and keeping the production on track. This adds an extra layer of responsibility on all our artists but it also gives that extra sense of ownership and involvement that motivates our artists to go the extra mile. This, together with a culture that encourages everyone to chip in with their ideas, is what enables ILP to deliver the quality we are known for.

We currently use Houdini for most scene assembly, Arnold for rendering and Nuke for compositing. That said, we always premiere quick learners over software specific knowledge.

Your work will include:

  • Creating lighting and render setups from scratch
  • Tweaking existing light rigs and shot templates
  • Both full CG shots and integration with live action
  • Optimising scenes for performance and render times
  • Scene assembly
  • A wide variety of 3D generalist tasks and problem solving
  • Constant and proactive dialogue with other departments
  • Work on some of the coolest shows in the business with some of the most talented colleagues

You need the following:

  • The ability to take ownership of your shots and push them to world class standards
  • An organised way of working - creating scenes that can easily be picked up by other artists

About the company

Important Looking Pirates is one of Scandinavia's biggest visual effects studios. Located in the heart of Stockholm we create photorealistic VFX for international TV series and feature films.

ILP was founded by artists in 2007 with the vision to become one of the top international suppliers of VFX. Since our management are artists themselves the focus of the company has always been on the quality of our work. That focus has not only earned us the big productions we are working on today but also international recognition and several of the most prestigious industry awards. We can proudly say that we have assembled one of the best visual effects teams in the business, currently with around 110 talents from all corners of the world.

Our latest projects include films like Star Wars - The Last Jedi, Jurassic World - Fallen Kingdom and Aladdin, and TV series like Carnival Row, Game of Thrones, Westworld and Lost in Space.

Our new headquarters is located in the famous Norstedts building on the islet of Riddarholmen. The office is designed to inspire creativity and to provide the best possible work environment for creating spectacular visual effects. Almost a third of the office consists of social areas where the pirates gather to have lunch and celebratory fikas, get company updates, participate in fussball tournaments, and hang out for Friday beers.
