The Financial Management Department in Santander Consumer Bank, headed by the Nordic CFO, is responsible for ensuring sufficient capital, funding and liquidity for the bank. The department consists of four teams, which are all located at Lysaker in Oslo: Capital Management, Treasury & Analysis, Capital Markets and Customer Deposits.
In recent years, capital requirements for banks have increased and so has the focus on efficient use of capital, return on capital and capital contribution. The Capital Management team was established in 2016, with the aim of ensuring sufficient capital to meet regulatory requirements and capital contribution requirements by the owner. Capital Management is as such responsible for coordinating activities impacting the bank’s capital position and to understand and communicate how the bank’s business, strategy and future regulation will impact the capital position and capital structure going forward. This requires close cooperation with the finance department, risk department, legal department, the commercial departments and senior management of the bank.
The Capital Management team is now looking to replace the current Capital Manager. The position represents an opportunity to further develop and influence in a field of high and growing importance, both within the Santander Group and in the banking sector in general. The work will provide a good understanding of how the bank operates and how the banking industry is developing. The position will report to the Capital Management Director.
The Capital Management function must ensure the bank has sufficient capital relative to its risks. This involves:
Responsibility for the internal capital adequacy assessment process (ICAAP), including stress-test and Pillar 3 Disclosure
Ensure we have a good methodology for calculating economic capital (EC) and that EC is used in the management of the bank
The Capital Manager will hold the responsibility for these processes.
Capital Forecasting & Budgeting
Capital Management is responsible for coordinating the capital forecasting and budgeting process and ensure alignment of assumptions, in close cooperation with Financial Control and Risk. Capital budget will include capital contribution, capital ratios, capital return measures and dividend. The Capital Manager will contribute actively with analytical support in these processes.
Capital monitoring and capital optimization measures
Capital Management is responsible for monitoring the capital budget and initiate measures in the event capital targets and budgets are not met. Such measures can include adjustment of dividend, sale of portfolios, capital relief transactions, etc. Capital relief transactions have in recent years become our most efficient capital management tool. Capital Management must understand the structure of these transactions and how they impact capital targets. The Capital Manager will contribute actively with analytical support in these processes.
Capital considerations in the credit admission process
Financial Management (FM) is a member of the Central Credit Committee (CCC). The Capital Manager will represent FM in this committee together with the CFO.
Capital Management should have the know-how of current and future capital regulation and assess how future regulation is expected to impact the bank. The Capital Manager is expected to build expertise knowledge in the area of capital regulation.
Capital Management is secretary for the Capital Committee and has to provide updates and prepare approvals for the Board of Directors. The Capital Manager will prepare necessary material and present to senior management.
Capital Management has the overall responsibility for the project “Capital Tools” aimed at improving capital management of the bank and ensure efficient reporting to the regulator. The Capital Manager’s involvement will depend on skills/experience.
