Commissioning Editor (maternity cover)

Bonnier Books UK imprint Studio Press is looking for an experienced editor to join the team in Chelsea. The commissioning editor will commission and create commercially viable books for the Studio Press list, leading the publishing programme alongside the publisher and other members of the team. The successful candidate must be able to project manage and editorially guide the creation of books within the allocated team, ensuring all books are produced to the quality and accuracy required, on schedule. They will also help to guide and mentor more junior members of the team.

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure books published support the vision and ethos of both Studio Press and the wider Bonnier Books UK remit.
  • Keep abreast of market trends, artists and authors and modify the publishing programme, as and when required, to reflect these trends.
  • Guide and manage book projects in line with the editorial and creative briefs, making sure all files are coordinated through the correct approval workflow.
  • Research, write, copy-edit, proofread and sign-off on a wide range of books across different formats.
  • Project-manage books in partnership with the design and production teams, making sure key milestones reached and final files are supplied on time
  • Ensure files are editorially accurate and prepared to the required quality during all stages (including final files, plotter and advance stages).
  • Check that all books are produced to house style guidelines and fulfil the in-house brief.
  • Research and suggest ideas for the future publishing list, playing an active part in new idea discussions, commissioning and acquiring titles.
  • Liaise with and manage third-party contributors, including packagers, illustrators, authors and other freelance agents.
  • Attend and present at regular new acquisitions meetings and sales meetings.
  • Work with the team to produce appropriate sales material, including cover copy, marketing copy and material for bookfairs.
  • Other ad hoc duties as assigned, including maintaining Biblio information and writing information sheets.
  • Draw up editorial project budgets and P&Ls for approval by the executive director.
  • Negotiate fees with freelance staff.

  • Experience mentoring other team members, providing guidance and ensuring departmental goals are achieved.
  • Demonstratable experience of assessing, implementing and ensuring processes are robust and fit-for-purpose is an advantage.
