Creating the next big mobile RPG

Rovio Stockholm is the studio behind the hugely popular Angry Birds 2, the bigger, badder and birdier sequel to the global phenomenon that put Angry Birds on the map. Following up a phenomenon is always a huge challenge, and it has been extremely rewarding to see the sequel thrive. While we continue to expand and improve that title, we are developing new IPs and exploring new game ideas, specifically within the RPG genre.

Our mission is to become the best mobile RPG developer in the west. That’s no small task, but we believe that we have a unique possibility to mix this studio’s experience of creating accessible, inclusive mass-market games with our love for RPGs. Our design pillars are: dynamic, character-driven, and highly social. We strive to create mid-core games that are both approachable and challenging.

In the Stockholm studio, we keep a flat hierarchy, a high level of transparency, and open communication. Our team is always trying to find ways to improve our projects, tools, communication, and ourselves, while keeping the atmosphere friendly, inclusive, respectful and super supportive. We also respect each other’s time. We make sure that we learn both from our mistakes and our success as we grow both in number and in experience. At the Stockholm Studio you will be working with great co-workers in a team-oriented, informal, international, and inspiring environment.

Art Director for Rovio Stockholm

You coach and elevate your team. You will be the team lead for our studio artists ranging from talented junior artists to seasoned senior artists with years of background in the gaming industry. You get joy out of bringing out the best in people and seeing them grow and become even better.

You have vision. We need someone to help define the artistic vision for our games. You will work with the team to develop new IPs and also interpretations of the Angry Birds brand. With the help of player and market insight you will define what our audience wants, what creates the true emotional connection to the games we make: shape the soul of the game.

You push for quality. Rovio is well known for making games with genuinely world-class production values. You need to take responsibility for ensuring that our studio is producing top quality as well as making sure the cross-game art styles are consistent and speak to the same overall vision.

You'll fit in if you want to:

  • Create and execute a vision for the studio art direction.
  • Achieve both creative and commercial success in mobile F2P.
  • Working hands on in creating concept art and visual targets.
  • Help to devise IPs and art styles that meet the technical, creative and commercial aims of the team.
  • Be a champion for good communication and facilitate learning and knowledge sharing, across other Rovio Studios.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Experience leading teams of artists on shipped titles in the commercial gaming industry.
  • Fluency in English
  • Genuine interest in F2P and mobile games.

We’d love you to have some of these:

  • Experience of working on games in Unity.
  • Experience in story & world building as well as character design.
  • A breadth and a depth of aesthetic interests outside of games, e.g. in the world of entertainment and pop culture.
  • Art production experience both from technical (pipelines, workflows) and production point of view.
  • Experience from art outsourcing.

But most of all, we want somebody who shares our passion for free-to-play mobile games and learning together!

If you see the fit, we look forward to receiving your application, including portfolio.
