Northvolt has an exciting job possibility for a world leading engineer specialized in the field of Industrial Automation System Design with focus on ABB 800xA.

You will be given the opportunity to join us in building one of the first large scale European battery factories, playing an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. You will be part of a team whose task is developing software solutions and new technologies required for the building of successive future factories.

You will be working intimately with the Factory Design team designing and implementing a highly automated production process realized in part by using ABB’s Ability 800xA platform. Your role in integrating automation solutions with 800xA will require you to work integrally with the Software Engineering Team responsible for higher-level MES, ERP and PLM systems.

You will be part of a core team working in a unique environment combining the use of proven technologies and designing new innovative solutions, together with the best solution providers globally. Our factories will be highly automated with world leading traceability solutions – something that sets us apart and that makes this role crucial for our success.

In general, you would contribute to the team with your vast experience in the implementation of DCS systems (ABB 800xA experience is strongly preferred), batching (including recipe handling) and experience in driving large, innovative and challenging automation projects with high demands on accuracy, traceability and scaling.

Specifically, you have a deep understanding and hands-on experience of integrating very diverse, complex, equipment into higher automation layers developing some of the most advanced control systems in the world. You work symbiotically with the Plant Design and Manufacturing Engineers teams, translating their inputs into crisp specifications and orchestrating the execution in an ecosystem of external suppliers and own developers.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in design workshops internally and with external suppliers
  • Design distributed Industrial IT system architectures with the aforementioned technologies (ABB 800xA being advantageous)
  • Author and review Engineering Design Documentation (Requirement specifications, Functional design, Logic diagrams, Test Cases, Test Records)
  • Participate in setting global standards and the associated processes and strategies which disseminate and enforce these standards
  • Participate in R&D activities for piloting of new technological solutions and integrating them within the 800xA environment
  • Participate in education and knowledge transfer workshops
  • Cost estimations for projects and change requests. Provide input for quoting and planning works
  • Definition of software (including controls) coding standards and configuration management requirements
  • Code review and test of other’s work as well as improving and defining code review practices
  • Participate in and contribute toward design forums and improvement meetings for technical improvement and optimization of software processes pertaining to 800xA
  • Maintaining and develop the ABB 800xA application in the factory(‘s).

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our two gigafactories: Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden, and Northvolt Zwei in Salzgitter, Germany.   We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.

Join us today. Together, let’s enable the future of energy!
