Northvolt is right now looking for a Thermal Design Engineer for Li-ion cell development to join our team and be involved in the development of Prismatic and Cylindrical cells. You will be given the opportunity to develop li-ion battery cells, impacting cell designs, performing simulations, setup tests concepts, create and develop modules etc. as well as being a part of building one of the first European large-scale lithium-ion battery factories.

We are searching for a Thermal Design engineer with experience of developing Li-ion cells but can also have similar experience of designing products from a thermal perspective and it challenges. Having a good understanding of production processes and have a proven record of taking part in the full development of products is a qualifying experience, including develop models and simulations results to support and drive the design.

Key responsibilities:

  • Developing lithium-ion cells for Energy Storage, Electric Vehicles and other applications
  • Plan, organize, direct and follow up on project related testing activities
  • Ensure delivery of the project activities and interact with (Supply Chain, Process Engineering, R&D Labs, Northvolt Battery System unit etc.)
  • Facilitate communication and clarification of technical requirements between customers and Northvolt's internal stakeholders
  • Develop and review thermal and simulation models with computer aided tools
  • Drive and lead internal and external design reviews within the thermal area and include your findings to create better products

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

  • BSc, MSc or PhD degree within thermal and simulation engineering areas or relevant field or comparable work experience
  • +3 years of thermal and/or simulation design experience with focus on Li-ion cells, where part of the experience is in product development.

  • Experience from development and testing of secondary batteries, lithium-ion based technologies is preferable

  • Excellent communication skills as you will be in constant interaction with international customers and team members from both the technical and business development side

  • Recognize the risk of cell/battery development and production

  • Strong Hands-On computer aided design skills

  • Preferably has experience and has practiced electrode and cell design, electrode preparation process, cell fabrication and electrochemical performance evaluation

  • Experience from one or several of COMSOL, Ansys, Siemens NX or similar CAE simulation software is a must

    Specific skills/abilities

  • Excellent English written and oral skills. Korean, Japanese, German or Swedish is a plus!

  • Ability to work under high pressure with tight deadlines

  • Strong organization skills and used to manage a range of activities simultaneously

  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, as well as independently

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration.
