Did you know that Stingray delivers world-leading Norwegian high-tech?
We develop intelligent aquaculture technology for the removal of salmon lice 24/7 using machine vision and laser, as well as monitoring lice levels, measuring fish welfare and growth. Collectively, this is known as The Fish Health Hub ™. Our technology contributes to increased food production on nature's terms, without compromising the environment and animal welfare. With our services, we are proud to help shape the future of aquaculture - Made in Norway.

Apply science and data to real-world aquaculture challenges
We are now looking for a Research Data Scientist to strengthen our Research team and help turn complex biological and operational information into scientific insight and practical applications.

As part of Stingray Aqua, the Research team acts as a bridge between technology and data specialists and customer-facing teams. Aqua Research builds and shares knowledge across Stingray and the wider aquaculture sector. It also supports the development and validation of data-driven solutions that strengthen our day-to-day services and operations, ultimately supporting better fish welfare and customer success in Norway, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands.

Key Responsibilities – What will you do?
As a Research Data Scientist, you will bring a rigorous scientific approach to the continuous development and improvement of the services associated with our technology platform. You will work both independently and collaboratively with other researchers, software engineers, and customer-facing biological and operational teams to transform real-world operational data into robust analytical workflows and functional capabilities that others can rely on.

You will combine rigorous data analysis with iterative technical development, while keeping focus on the biological complexities associated with fish behavior and the constraints of ongoing farming operations. Your work will contribute directly to creating tools and capabilities used by our customers and employees.

Your tasks and responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Driving the iterative development of functional capabilities by developing concepts and analytical workflows to test and refine methods and assumptions, ensuring that solutions remain grounded in data and biological understanding.
  • Designing and evaluating validation studies based on data from commercial aquaculture operations, applying appropriate experimental and statistical methods to account for biological variability and operational constraints.
  • Analyzing extensive biological and operational datasets and developing statistical models to identify and evaluate meaningful patterns, relationships, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Defining data requirements and independently retrieving, combining, and quality-assuring large and heterogenous data sets to build reproducible analytical workflows and reusable data pipelines, ensuring traceability and appropriate documentation throughout the process.
  • Interpreting and communicating findings to internal and external audiences, translating complex results into practical insights that support fact-based decision-making and further development.

Who we are looking for
We are looking for someone with a strong quantitative and computational background who can take ownership of technically complex research problems in the context of day-to-day operations with a focus on fish welfare and behavior. You combine scientific judgement with technical discipline and are comfortable moving between exploratory research questions and the development of hands-on solutions. Most importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys working across disciplines. You can discuss biological hypotheses with scientists, independently investigate the underlying data, and work with software engineers and customer contacts to determine how a promising research method can become a reliable functional capability.

As an ideal candidate, you have:

  • A PhD in aquaculture, biology, environmental science, or another relevant life or quantitative natural science, and preferably 3-5 years of additional relevant research and/or applied analytical experience.
  • A solid understanding of applied research methodology, experimental design, statistical modeling and result validation.
  • The ability to analyze complex longitudinal, time-series, or other observational datasets obtained under real-world operational conditions. Experience with behavioral or sensor data derived from computer vision, sonar, or other monitoring systems is an advantage.
  • Strong programming, data analysis, and statistical modelling skills using tools such as R and/or Python. Experience with Power BI is an advantage.
  • Experience with reproducible analytical workflows, data pipelines, and data quality assurance is an advantage, as is familiarity with SQL and data platforms such as Snowflake.
  • The ability to communicate scientific results and their implications clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Prior experience with aquaculture, fish biology or behavioral ecology is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English is essential. Norwegian language skills are an advantage, and we will support you in developing them.

To thrive in this role, you should be analytical, independent, curious, and professionally engaged. You enjoy getting into the details of complex problems without losing sight of practical applications and customer needs. You approach research in a structured and solution-oriented way, enjoy interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific discussion, and are motivated by the opportunity to use technology and research to contribute to improved fish welfare and the sustainable development of aquaculture.

What do we offer?
With us, you will have the opportunity to explore your interests, contribute to established professional communities, and take part in pioneering work at the intersection of fish health and technology.

You will work with challenges, production data, and insights that few others in the industry have access to, while playing an active role in the development of solutions used at aquaculture sites every single day.

Our work environment is characterized by collaboration, high levels of expertise, and strong professional engagement. We also place great importance on the social aspect of work, offering activity groups, team gatherings, events, excursions, a subsidized cafeteria, and fitness opportunities, including access to our own on-site gym.

Team Stingray has its roots beneath the surface, where our people, passion, and diversity bring us together. StingrayPodden is the result of the many stories that deserve a platform where humor, energy, and engagement can rise from the depths. Follow our podcast on Spotify!

Are you our new Research Data Scientist? Then we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Come as you are to Team Stingray - We look forward to hearing from you!

Om selskapet

Stingray is based in a modern head office at Stålfjæra 26 and has its own buildings for production at Stålfjæra 25 and 27. It is a short distance to both bus, subway and train. Stingray Avd. Nord-Norge is located at Fauske, where we have resources in service and fish biology in a modern building. Here we are strategically well placed, close to a large proportion of our customers, where we organize customer service and professional activities.
We are a proud full-circle producer. This means that we machine the components, build the parts, make the robots and develop all runtime and other software. We provide the infrastructure needed to deliver a world-leading all-inclusive, plug-and-play sustainable solution. Thanks to technology, we and our customers can sit in control centers miles away and manage The Fish Health Hub ™. We monitor millions of fish, analyze trends, interpret data, advise and follow up our customers daily from A-Z in fish health and production-related issues, as well as other matters that contribute to increased knowledge without handling the fish.
Since October 2014, the company has been commercial with a high-tech solution for the removal of salmon lice in salmon and trout farming. A number of farming companies use the company's products and services, so that they have better lice control and more insight-driven production at their facilities. Stingray has international growth ambitions and solid finances.
