Country Manager/Trade Commissioner, Canada

We are currently looking for a new Trade Commissioner/Country Manager to head up our team in Toronto and be part of growing our footprint and presence in Canada and Americas.

With many years of experience, supporting Swedish companies, we have created a strong network and reached an outstanding level of competence in how business works in Canada and in the wider region. Over the last years we have seen an increased interest from Swedish companies to enter and expand in the Canadian market and we believe that this interest will only continue to grow, it is a truly exciting time to join the team and the region! Our team has recently been growing and we are now nine team members with with deep knowledge of business development and doing business in Canada.

Canada’s economy is the tenth largest in the world and a majority of the 35 million population live within 200 km to the world’s largest economy of USA. Canada is a young and modern nation with business culture similar to Sweden, providing easy and transparent business discussions.

Canada’s resource based industries, including mining, water, forestry, energy, oil and gas have fit well into the interests and competencies of Swedish industry. With quickly growing major cities, Canada needs to keep up demand for improving infrastructure and expanding local transportation networks. Canada’s large size demonstrates challenges and seeks innovation within technology/ICT, communication and e-commerce, industries in which companies from a mature and knowledgeable Swedish market often find beneficial partnerships with Canadian companies, universities or research institutes. Swedish healthcare companies also find similarities with doing business in Canada dealing with a public healthcare system. Within all industries, Business Sweden can help find opportunities and assist with making the most efficient market entry strategy.

What do we expect from you?

As a Country Manager/Trade Commissioner, you will have responsibility for sales and delivery and for developing the Business Sweden staff. You will be based in Toronto and report to Vice President Americas, Olof Hällerman.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Representing interests of Swedish companies and Business Sweden in Canada.
  • Selling and marketing Business Sweden's services to existing and potential clients in Sweden and Canada, including add-on sales in on-going projects
  • Maintaining continuous contact with existing and potential clients and stakeholders
  • Managing, planning and participating in the execution of consulting/internationalization assignments
  • Full Profit & Loss responsibility
  • Management of the office and employees, inspiring and developing the team
  • Developing business processes and organization
  • Operating from a global perspective to promote Swedish industry and companies
  • Work in a Team Sweden context collaborating with Swedish Embassy and other governmental institutions

You will have very close relations to the Swedish representations in the market. This means that you will be an official representative for Sweden, acting in close collaboration with the Swedish Foreign Services and other organisations.

Skills & Requirements

Desired skills and experience

  • You have an academic degree within Business Administration and/or Engineering
  • You have at least 10 years of relevant work experience from management consulting or from a role in the industry within business development and/or corporate strategy
  • You are a strong leader and have experience of managing a team
  • You have performed successful strategic sales and have a proven track record of developing customers, deep customer insight and strong negotiation and closing skills
  • You are analytical, reflective, focused and action oriented
  • You have in depth experience from multi stakeholder projects, including government clients (Swedish and non-Swedish)
  • A high level of proficiency in both written and spoken English and Swedish is a requirement
  • Language skills in French is meriting
  • Experience from living/working in Canada and/or North America is meriting
  • Swedish Citizenship is required

You are perceived as a strong leader and have an outstanding ability to build personal relations, empathy and trust. You have a vision and a strong drive to develop Business Sweden’s operations in Canada and Americas even further. You furthermore have excellent organisation, communication and problem solving skills as well as an ability to handle multiple priorities.
