Northvolt is now looking for a Director of Validation that will be responsible for the operation of the for Li-ion battery cell and module testing facilities at Northvolt. The role includes the responsibility to enable the development of the worlds greenest and most sustainable of Li-ion battery cells.

With a thorough understanding and experiences with testing of battery cells and modules you will be an integral part in the testing, verification and qualification of new generation of Li-ion batteries. You will be responsible for the planning, expansion and development of the test and validation capacity to enable a successful li-ion battery development. The test and validation team develop and performs tests on battery cells and components (cathode material, anode material, electrolyte, separators etc.) along with preparation, production and testing of different form factors (Coin cells, Cylindrical Cells, Prismatic Cells). Battery modules and packs will also be tested and evaluated by the team

The Design of Engineering (DOE) and Validation tests during a cell and module development project includes life, performance, safety and environmental tests according to standards like UN 38.3, GB/T 31485, IEC 62133 and UL1642 etc.

You will be responsible for the project deliveries and report to both internal and external steering committees for the projects. You will also work with a broad perspective from high level prerequisites and concept development in the early phases to the later project phases managing planning, development and delivery.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Build, Plan, Organize, direct and follow up on project related testing activities
  • Ensure delivery of test and validation capacity for battery development projects
  • Enable and develop capacity for Northvolt tests and validation needs.
  • Enable the development of the team to perform on a continuous high level

Skills & Requirements


  • MSc or PhD degree within relevant field or comparable work experience
  • More than 8 years experience from development and testing of secondary batteries, lithium-ion based technologies.
  • Experience in leading testing and validation teams and organizations
  • Excellent communication skills as you will be in constant interaction with international customers and team members from both the technical and business development side
  • Proven results in meeting customer requirements and expectations
  • Experienced in handling the risk of cell and battery development and production
  • Understanding of electrode and cell design, electrode preparation process, cell fabrication and electrochemical performance evaluation

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent English written and oral skills, Languages like Japanese, Korean or German is a big plus
  • Successful history of working with mid and senior level technical teams, purchasing and management
  • Strong leadership skills with experience from growing and developing a team as well as proven track record of successfully developing team members, support their growth and let them excel
  • Experience from start-up environment is a plus
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, as well as independently

About the company

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy. Northvolt’s team of experts is building the next generation battery cell factory focused on process innovation, scale and vertical integration. Once completed, it will be Europe’s largest battery cell factory and produce 32 GWh worth of capacity annually.
