Position Summary:

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for the leadership, management, and continuous improvement of all Environmental, Health, Safety, Workers’ Compensation, Transportation Safety, EMS, security, and risk management programs across two facilities in close proximity. This role drives the reduction of risk, prevention of injuries, protection of the environment, and overall enhancement of EHS performance.

The EHS Manager ensures full compliance with OSHA and all applicable federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations. This position leads injury prevention initiatives, environmental compliance programs (including Environmental Management Systems), and regulatory reporting while proactively identifying, resolving, and preventing EHS deficiencies.

The role oversees injury case management and Workers’ Compensation administration, including claims management and return-to-work coordination. In addition, the EHS Manager provides technical safety expertise, supports transportation and vehicle safety programs, oversees site security operations, and serves as a key advisor to plant leadership on risk mitigation strategies.

As a visible safety leader, this individual is responsible for educating and influencing employees at all levels within a diverse work environment, fostering a strong safety culture built on accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.

By virtue of this key leadership position, the EHS Manager also supports the company’s environmental and social responsibility initiatives, driving measurable progress toward corporate sustainability goals and B Corp certification ambitions.

Key Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

• Maintain OSHA 300 logs, BLS reporting, and required notifications for serious injuries and incidents.

• Prepare and submit required environmental reports and regulatory documentation.

• Identify regulatory risks and implement mitigation strategies.

• Maintain all EHS documentation, records, and audit readiness.

Environmental Management

• Lead site environmental programs including hazardous waste, stormwater pollution prevention, and wastewater management etc.

• Manage and oversee the Environmental Management System (EMS).

• Monitor environmental and utility data via software platforms; analyze trends and report findings and recommendations to leadership.

• Proactively address environmental deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.

Safety Leadership & People Safety

• Develop, implement, and continuously improve site safety programs.

• Promote a proactive safety culture through engagement, training, and leadership visibility.

• Conduct routine facility inspections to identify hazards and implement corrective/preventive measures.

• Lead incident investigations (injuries, near misses, vehicle events) and ensure root cause analysis and corrective actions are completed.

• Manage site safety platforms including general safety programs, behavior-based safety observations, task safety processes, SDS management, and reporting systems.

Workers’ Compensation & Injury Management

• Oversee the administration of the sites Workers’ Compensation program. Including the on time reporting and documenting of injuries, medical reports and other records as needed.

• Manage injury case coordination, documentation, and return-to-work programs.

• Partners with legal, third-party claim reps, local HR teams, corporate EHS and site leadership teams to reduce claims frequency and severity.

Transportation Safety

• Lead transportation and vehicle safety programs, including vehicle event investigations and driver safety compliance.

• Monitor transportation-related risk and ensure proper reporting and corrective actions.

Training & Development

• Ensure all employees (hourly, salaried, temporary) receive required safety and environmental training.

• Conduct onboarding EHS training for new hires and contractors.

• Train managers and supervisors on EHS program ownership and compliance requirements.

• Plan and facilitate training on safety standards, PPE, fire prevention, emergency response, and incident investigation.

Security & Emergency Preparedness

• Oversee local site security services, practices, and daily operations.

• Develop and maintain emergency response plans and conduct drills as required.

• Ensure preparedness for fire, environmental, medical, and security-related incidents.

Leadership & Site Oversight

• Provide direct supervision and development of an EHS team member(s).

• Support Corporate EHS initiatives while ensuring alignment with plant operational goals.

• Partner with plant leadership to achieve safety and environmental performance targets.

Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree within the EH&S areas, i.e., Safety Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of EHS experience; OR a minimum of 7 years of progressive EHS experience with a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential.

• At least 3 years of experience supporting a large manufacturing or production facility (food manufacturing experience strongly preferred).

• Demonstrated experience managing regulatory compliance, injury prevention programs, workers’ compensation case management, and environmental management system programs within a manufacturing environment.

• Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other nationally recognized EHS credential strongly preferred but not required.

• Working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies preferred.

Physical Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the associate will be required to perform repetitive movements, occasionally lifting 50 or more pounds. The associate regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to extreme cold. The associate frequently works in high, precarious places. The associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
