Six Sigma Quality Engineer

Northvolt has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Six Sigma Quality Engineer to to join our bold project team in Västerås and later on with the option to transfer to Skellefteå, where we start production within the next few years.

In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in enabling supply of the first large scale European battery factory. Northvolt will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society. We are continuously building a team of experienced Quality Engineers and great leaders with industry background.

You will be in charge of developing, defining and implementing the data driven continuous improvement and trouble shooting methodology, quality standards, procedures and quality management principles for Northvolt’s Li-ion manufacturing operations, reporting to the Director of Quality. You will also be responsible for reviewing quality and manufacturability of new product development projects and product designs and will work closely with R&D and Production to follow-up and improve yield with a zerro defect target to ensure a flawless transition into manufacture and supply of our Li-ion cells. You are skilled in running Design of Experiments to resolve difficult and complex problems and optimise our processes.

The Six Sigma Quality Engineer will be an expert in six sigma techniques and statistics as well as Lean methodology which includes deep knowledge in quality process design, continuous improvement, process robustness and capability, six sigma, quality KPI's and monitoring of quality performance etc. You will play an important role to lead and co-ordinate quality monitoring, improvements and reporting, issue and crisis management, RCA/8D as well as proactive quality planning.

In general, you have a long experience as a six sigma practitioner and have been driving large, innovative and challenging improvement projects internally and with external partners in the area of quality, process capability improvements, efficiency and optimisation. Specifically, you have a deep understanding of working and cooperating cross-functionally in a multicultural environment with Business Development/Marketing, R&D, Production, Maintenance, IT and Automation.

The candidate should be analytical and logical with an ability to identify opportunities and improvements to drive increased quality through data driven approaches, i.e. six sigma and statistical methodologies. The candidate should have strong technical abilities in order to succeed in this role.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Defining and executing improvements for each process operation

  • Set up quality monitoring procedures, evaluate performance and make improvement proposals, i.e. Process capability: SPC and Cpk

  • Collaborate with R&D and process engineering in the development phase to ensure manufacturability of new products

  • Oversee appropriate Quality and process KPI's, review results and process performance to initiate improvement projects

  • Lead trouble shooting and root cause analysis activities in relation to deviations and quality issues, e.g 8D

  • Expert in complex problem solving and process optimisation, i.e skilled in DMAIC and DoE, multivariat data analysis etc.

  • Collaborate closely with Customer quality engineers to deliver required input to customer projects, e.g. PPAP documentation

  • Develop, implement and audit standard procedures and instructions

  • Facilitate DFMEA's and PFMEA's

  • Work across many parts of the organization, collaborating with the Battery Systems organization, business development, technical, design and development teams, automation and external partners

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

  • MSc degree in Chemistry/Manufacturing/Engineering

  • Education in relevant quality and industrialisation discipline

  • Certified six sigma professional, i.e. black belt

  • Knowledgable in statistics and multivariat data analysis

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience within high volume assembly/production

  • Experience of quality management in relevant industry, e.g. battery, automotive, pharma, food, pulp & paper, FMGC

  • Knowledge of quality management systems, e.g. ISO 9001, IATF16949, TQM

  • Experience in developing processes, standards, procedures and documentation in an efficient way to ensure high quality products to meet customer requirements

  • Project management skills and a successful track record of leading quality improvement/six sigma projects in manufacturing and/or with suppliers

  • Experience from developing training and certification procedures and programs

  • Knowledgeable in Lean and six sigma

  • Expert in SPC, process capability, FMEA, Quality troubleshooting tools and problem solving methodology

  • Curious, technically educated and preferably with a strong business background

  • Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Excellent English written and oral skills, Swedish is a plus

  • Highly organized and results driven

About the company

Northvolt was founded in 2016 with the mission to build the world’s greenest battery cell, with a minimal carbon footprint and the highest ambitions for recycling, to enable the European transition to renewable energy.
