Internship: Technical Artist (3D & Animation)

About the Role

We are looking for a creative and technical 3D artist intern to join our team, focusing on the visual heart of our product: the Furhat face. Unlike a traditional prototyping role, this internship is a deep dive into high-fidelity visual exploration. You will focus on pushing the boundaries of our robot's expressiveness through facial rig animations, 3D modeling, and game engine rendering.

This internship is ideal for someone eager to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of character art, technical animation, and social robotics. You will play a key role in defining how our robots portray emotions and connect with humans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facial Animation & Rigging: Explore and refine facial rig animations to create nuanced, lifelike portrayals of human emotions and expressions.
  • 3D Modeling: Create new character faces, skins, and assets, while working to improve existing graphics and visual fidelity.
  • Game Engine Exploration: Research and test different game engines (e.g., Unity, Unreal, Godot) to optimize rendering performance and explore new visual possibilities for the Furhat platform.
  • Visual Prototyping: Collaborate with the product team to visually conceptualize new features or character personalities.
  • Asset Pipeline: Assist in streamlining the process from 3D model creation to real-time engine implementation.

Who You Are

  • A student, recent graduate, or someone looking to gain experience in 3D Animation, Game Art, Technical Art, or Computer Graphics.
  • A creative soul with a technical edge. You enjoy making things look good but also want to understand the how behind the rendering.
  • Detail-oriented with a keen eye for anatomy, facial expressions, and motion.
  • A problem-solving mindset and eagerness to experiment with new tools and engines.
  • Passionate about bringing characters to life and exploring the future of human-robot interaction.

Skill Requirements

  • Strong interest or experience in 3D Modeling and Texturing (e.g., Blender, Maya, ZBrush).
  • Experience or strong interest in Rigging and Facial Animation.
  • Familiarity with real-time Game Engines (such as Unity or Unreal Engine).
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Basic General Requirements:

  • Experience, passion, and talent in a field critical to our success.
  • A strong belief in your work and a desire to see robots improve quality of life in society.
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week).
  • Availability to work onsite at our office in Stockholm.
  • Commitment to giving 100% to Furhat during your internship.
  • Highly coachable and eager to learn.

Please note that our internships are unpaid. We invest in you by providing mentorship, learning opportunities, and hands-on experience in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We do, however, offer some support for transport and similar expenses, based on individual circumstances.

Our internships are designed with the potential to transition into full-time employment, but even if that’s not the outcome, we aim to provide a launchpad for your career growth elsewhere.

Important: We can only accept candidates who are eligible to work in Sweden without visa sponsorship. This means you must have EU citizenship or a valid Swedish work permit.

About the company

Furhat Robotics revolutionizes how people interact with information around them. We are a high-growth artificial intelligence and robotics startup from KTH in Sweden. Our vision is to create technology that is built fundamentally on principles of social intelligence and to empower people by designing computer interfaces that are socially aware. Our forerunner innovation is the Furhat robot, an award-winning and patented social human-like robot head. No one who’s seen Furhat is left untouched.

Furhat’s face is superior in that it is designed using computer animation with unique expressiveness and customizability, putting special focus on the personality and character of the robot. Furhat's “brain” is powered by a state-of-the-art conversational platform which is used to build highly sophisticated and socially-aware spoken interactions. Today, the robot is available as a development platform for developers, and early adopters. We see social robots to be a game changing interface to artificially intelligent agents. Join us and help to create a more social future, and to bring social robots to the world.
