Internship: Internship: Mechatronics & Embedded Systems

About the Role

We are looking for a versatile Mechatronics Intern to join our R&D team. In this role, you will bridge the gap between the physical and the digital, ensuring that the Furhat robot is not just a smart computer, but a state-of-the-art electromechanical machine.

This internship is focused on hardware innovation and integration. You will explore how the latest cutting-edge components—from sensors to actuators—can be integrated into our platform. You won’t just be maintaining existing hardware; you will be prototyping the next generation of solutions, requiring a fluid mix of mechanical design, electronics, and embedded programming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hardware R&D: Research, compare, and test the latest electronic components and actuators to improve the robot's reliability, movement, and sensory capabilities.
  • Embedded Systems & Firmware: Program microcontrollers to handle sensor data acquisition, motor control, and low-level signal processing.
  • Electromechanical Integration: Design and prototype physical solutions (CAD) and custom circuits (PCB) to integrate new hardware features into the robot.
  • System Integration: Work on interfacing low-level hardware with the robot’s high-level Linux architecture.
  • User-Centric Prototyping: Apply an industrial design mindset to ensure that hardware improvements not only function well but also enhance the overall User Experience (UX) and aesthetic of the product.

Who You Are

  • A student or enthusiast with a broad background in Mechatronics, Robotics, or both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
  • You have a "Product Mindset"—you understand that hardware specs, industrial design, and UX are deeply interconnected.
  • A hands-on problem solver who is just as comfortable designing a gear in CAD as you are soldering a circuit board or writing C code.
  • You are curious about the entire technology stack, from the nuts and bolts up to the operating system.

Skill Requirements

  • Strong knowledge in Mechanical Design (CAD) and Electronics (Schematics/PCB).
  • Experience with Microcontroller programming (e.g., C/C++, Arduino, STM32) and Signal Processing.
  • Familiarity with Linux environments and Linux architecture is a strong plus.
  • Basic general programming skills (Python/Shell) and an appreciation for Industrial Design are highly advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Basic General Requirements:

  • Experience, passion, and talent in a field critical to our success.
  • A strong belief in your work and a desire to see robots improve quality of life in society.
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week).
  • Availability to work onsite at our office in Stockholm.
  • Commitment to giving 100% to Furhat during your internship.
  • Highly coachable and eager to learn.

Please note that our internships are unpaid. We invest in you by providing mentorship, learning opportunities, and hands-on experience in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We do, however, offer some support for transport and similar expenses, based on individual circumstances.

Our internships are designed with the potential to transition into full-time employment, but even if that’s not the outcome, we aim to provide a launchpad for your career growth elsewhere.

Important: We can only accept candidates who are eligible to work in Sweden without visa sponsorship. This means you must have EU citizenship or a valid Swedish work permit.

About the company

Furhat Robotics revolutionizes how people interact with information around them. We are a high-growth artificial intelligence and robotics startup from KTH in Sweden. Our vision is to create technology that is built fundamentally on principles of social intelligence and to empower people by designing computer interfaces that are socially aware. Our forerunner innovation is the Furhat robot, an award-winning and patented social human-like robot head. No one who’s seen Furhat is left untouched.

Furhat’s face is superior in that it is designed using computer animation with unique expressiveness and customizability, putting special focus on the personality and character of the robot. Furhat's “brain” is powered by a state-of-the-art conversational platform which is used to build highly sophisticated and socially-aware spoken interactions. Today, the robot is available as a development platform for developers, and early adopters. We see social robots to be a game changing interface to artificially intelligent agents. Join us and help to create a more social future, and to bring social robots to the world.
