Internship: Acoustics & Audio Engineering

About the Role

We are looking for a technically minded Audio Intern to join our team, focusing on one of the most critical senses of our robot: hearing. While our visual team works on how the robot sees, you will be dedicated to improving how the robot listens in complex real-world environments.

This internship is a deep dive into microphone technology, acoustic signal processing, and hardware integration. You will explore and prototype technical solutions to improve how our robots capture speech, focusing on noise isolation, echo cancellation, and directional audio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Microphone Array Exploration: Test and evaluate different microphone configurations (linear vs. circular arrays, mono vs. stereo, directional mics) to determine the optimal setup for spatial audio and speech recognition.
  • Signal Processing R&D: Work on technical improvements for beamforming and Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC) to enhance audio clarity.
  • Barge-in Capabilities: Help fine-tune the system to allow for "barge-in", enabling the robot to detect and process user interruptions while it is speaking.
  • Hardware & Mounting: Experiment with different physical mountings and isolation techniques to reduce mechanical noise and improve raw audio quality.
  • Prototyping: Build and test audio hardware setups, combining electronics tinkering with software analysis.

Who You Are

  • A student or enthusiast with a strong technical background in Audio Engineering, Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, or Signal Processing.
  • A "tinkerer" at heart. You enjoy getting your hands on hardware, soldering, or hacking together solutions to see what works.
  • Someone who understands the physics of sound and the challenges of capturing clear audio in noisy environments.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with a passion for high-fidelity audio.

Skill Requirements

  • Strong technical knowledge of Microphones and Audio Hardware.
  • Familiarity with audio processing concepts like AEC, Beamforming, and Noise Suppression.
  • Background or interest in Electronics (prototyping, soldering, basic circuits) and Software (scripting for testing/analysis, e.g., Python or C++).
  • Strong communication skills in English.

Basic General Requirements:

  • Experience, passion, and talent in a field critical to our success.
  • A strong belief in your work and a desire to see robots improve quality of life in society.
  • Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week).
  • Availability to work onsite at our office in Stockholm.
  • Commitment to giving 100% to Furhat during your internship.
  • Highly coachable and eager to learn.

Please note that our internships are unpaid. We invest in you by providing mentorship, learning opportunities, and hands-on experience in pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. We do, however, offer some support for transport and similar expenses, based on individual circumstances.

Our internships are designed with the potential to transition into full-time employment, but even if that’s not the outcome, we aim to provide a launchpad for your career growth elsewhere.

Important: We can only accept candidates who are eligible to work in Sweden without visa sponsorship. This means you must have EU citizenship or a valid Swedish work permit.

About the company

Furhat Robotics revolutionizes how people interact with information around them. We are a high-growth artificial intelligence and robotics startup from KTH in Sweden. Our vision is to create technology that is built fundamentally on principles of social intelligence and to empower people by designing computer interfaces that are socially aware. Our forerunner innovation is the Furhat robot, an award-winning and patented social human-like robot head. No one who’s seen Furhat is left untouched.

Furhat’s face is superior in that it is designed using computer animation with unique expressiveness and customizability, putting special focus on the personality and character of the robot. Furhat's “brain” is powered by a state-of-the-art conversational platform which is used to build highly sophisticated and socially-aware spoken interactions. Today, the robot is available as a development platform for developers, and early adopters. We see social robots to be a game changing interface to artificially intelligent agents. Join us and help to create a more social future, and to bring social robots to the world.
