Backend Developer for Otava Learning

We at Otava Publishing Company are now looking for an experienced Backend Developer to join our software development team in Otava Learning. In this role, you will be building and maintaining applications used by learners of all ages – from primary education through high school and all the way to adult education. Together with product owners, designers and pedagogical experts you will turn various educational needs into accessible and inspiring digital experiences for teachers, students, and pupils all the while helping us to improve our development practices.

We are looking for someone who has designed and delivered robust, scalable backend services and can be an innovative, resourceful, and collaborative problem-solver. You are willing to learn and develop your own and your team’s skills even further, especially within the field of agentic AI. We value good communication and teamworking skills, as this position requires close cooperation with other developers, architects, and testers as well as with different stakeholders within Otava Publishing Company. Working language of the digital development teams is English, but a working level Finnish makes your collaboration with our internal stakeholders easier. This is a hybrid position that requires occasional on-site presence at our Helsinki office.

We expect you to have:

• experience in utilizing the backend for frontend development pattern with Java
• good understanding of development best practices in object-oriented programming
• familiarity with secure software development and data protection best practices
• openness and interest towards AI driven software development and other new ways of working
• the ability and willingness to work together and help the entire team to grow
• fluency in English
• ability to work onsite at Helsinki approximately once a week

We consider as an advantage:

• prior experience with development on Quarkus platform
• experience with running containerized services on AWS platform with a high availability mentality
• experience in working with monorepos and CI/CD pipelines
• knowledge of AI assisted development tools
• knowledge of building applications that leverage LLMs
• working level Finnish skills are an asset
