Would you like to join a company positioned at the heart of global trade, marine insurance and shipping, in an international work environment with worldwide engagement? As the world’s largest marine insurer, we are now offering exciting career opportunities in one of the world’s leading marine insurers.
By joining our trainee program, you will receive unique and comprehensive training in both Claims and Underwriting, while also gaining a broad understanding of all our business areas. You will work in an international setting alongside leading experts who are passionate about what they do.
This year, the trainee program will primarily focus on our office in Tokyo or Imabari. However, we also welcome applications from candidates interested in joining our offices in Singapore or Hong Kong.
The main business areas relevant for the trainee program are:
Underwriting – our underwriters assess marine and energy risks, combining analytical expertise with soft skills in crafting insurance solutions tailored to each Member’s or client’s unique business needs, growth ambitions, and risk profile. This means the underwriters will use the combination of pricing model and market insights, alongside developing a deep understanding of the people and businesses that we serve. You will work with a team that actively collaborates with Claims and Loss Prevention, engaging in marketing and outreach to build strong relationships with Members, clients, and brokers. This teamwork allows you to negotiate effectively and deliver solutions that truly make a difference.
Claims – issuing an insurance policy is a promise to pay if the insured suffers a loss covered by the policy. Our claims people assess and handle claims across a wide range of areas such as cargo and property damage, people-related claims (e.g. crew, passengers, third parties, stowaways and refugees), casualties (e.g. collisions, groundings fires), environmental incidents (e.g. pollution, wreck removal), piracy and hijackings etc. They focus on resolving issues efficiently to minimize financial loss, operational disruption, environmental damage and injuries / loss of life. Gard claims handlers work closely with Underwriting and Loss Prevention to market Gard’s capabilities.
The trainee program starts 1 April 2026 or 1 September 2026, depending on location and candidates. The program lasts for up to one year. The trainee contract is a permanent contract, which means you will be offered a job within one of our business areas, such as Claims or Underwriting after the end of the trainee program.

For more than 100 years Gard, one of the world’s leading marine insurers, has been helping the marine industries to protect their assets and safeguard their income. Having expanded from our origins in southern Norway to a network of 15 offices across the globe, we have witnessed the impact the sea can have and have learnt a thing or two.
Despite our breadth and depth of experience and expertise, we try to learn something new every day to prepare our Members and clients for their next journey, and to find and deliver the right solutions. So, whenever the unexpected arises it is good to know that someone is ready, willing and able to assist; someone with expertise that has been refined for over a century.
It is not just what we do, but how we do it that delivers the best value in the market – matching our expertise with an unrivalled commitment to what we do. We will turn every stone to find a solution and see it carried through.
Such ability and dedication is rare, so we take great care in choosing, training and supporting our employees. The way we see it, our people are the difference between good and great.”
