We’re looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join our newly founded team. A software developer who has hybrid designer/developer experience, is kind, empathetic, and has a service mindset.

In this role, you will work together with our product teams to design and develop the fundamental building blocks of Kesko’s products to accelerate development and elevate the quality and consistency of product team work. You will also find yourself talking to the system’s users and hosting monthly design system sessions.

Our frontend stack is primarily web standards based and consists of components that are written in JavaScript, HTML and CSS. They ship as standards based Custom Elements making them compatible with current and future JavaScript based frameworks like React, Vue, or Next.js.

In addition to frontend, you will also spend majority of your time in Figma to maintain and collaborate on Kesko’s Figma Toolkit including defining and standardizing reusable components. You will obviously also receive all the support you need from your colleagues.

Work location: Hybrid (Remote / K-Kampus, Helsinki)

What you will be doing

  • Serve as the primary owner of Kesko’s Figma Toolkit including defining and standardizing reusable design components.
  • Rapidly prototype and test new components to find solutions.
  • Help develop and maintain Kesko’s frontend tooling and the design system infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with product, design and engineering to create design components that evolve and improve the design system.
  • Advocate for accessibility standards and inclusive design principles.
  • Help teams across Kesko onboard the design system and provide support for the users.
  • Write clear and detailed documentation for multiple audiences.
  • Help make it possible for great user experiences to happen across all Kesko's services.
  • Help maintain a culture of empathy, safety and belonging where all voices are heard.

To succeed in this role, we believe that you have...

  • 5+ years of experience working in cross-functional product teams, and with accessibility.
  • 2+ years of experience building design systems in Figma.
  • 3+ years of experience with React, Next.js and TypeScript.
  • Understanding of the approaches to the creation, evolution and distribution of design systems and/or living style guides.
  • Familiarity of platform conventions for responsive web as well as iOS and Android.
  • Good understanding of web standards based development using semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more.
  • Strong JavaScript skills. Experience with modern JavaScript libraries and tooling, and debugging JavaScript issues.
  • Experience writing maintainable and scalable CSS.
  • Experience nurturing a work environment that allows everyone to bring their whole selves to work, and values diversity and inclusion.
  • Bonus points for experience with Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, Lit, Stencil, Custom Elements Manifest, or similar.

Why join us?

  • You’ll be working on business-critical platforms and your work really matters: the input you provide can affect the daily shopping experience of our customers (and there are millions of them, by the way!).
