Cell Design Engineer

Northvolt has an exciting job possibility for experienced engineer specialized in the field of Li-ion Battery Cell Development. You will be contributing from start to finish in building one of the first large scale European battery factories, which will play an important role in the transformation to a carbon free society.

We are looking for Cell Design Engineers with specialization in Li-ion technology to work within our R&D team. Please check below for key responsibilities!

Entry level:
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The junior cell design engineer will act as a "glue" and coordinator, supporting with all the experiments activities and the documentation. You will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best experts in the li-ion battery field and grow together with us in this exciting journey!

  • Documentation for cell manufacturing: Work order preparation, Preparation of semi-product specification, Preparation of product specification, Input required information to PLM
  • Supporting of DOE (Design of experiment) activities: Cross-checking the materials' stock in the inventory, Follow-up the DOE status with cell design engineer, Data gathering during DOE
  • Gathering of validation data and analysis (Supporting for cell design engineer)

Experienced level:
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing advanced lithium-ion battery cells for Energy Storage, Electric Vehicles and other applications
  • Plan, structure and implement design for Li-ion cells
  • Analysing test data and to improve battery properties and/or managements system
  • Development of large-scale manufacturing process as Project Leader and/or Laboratory experience.
  • Construct cell assembly test line
  • Introduce and evaluate materials for improvement of battery life and safety performance

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

Entry level:

  • A degree in Electrochemistry, Material engineering or Chemical engineering is required
  • Knowledge/experience in Chemical analysis, Thermal analysis for organic and inorganic materials, Electrochemical analysis is a must
  • Curious, eager to learn and develop
  • Must have worked in a multi-cultural environment
  • Experience and interest in the manufacturing industry is a plus

Experienced level:

  • PhD or MSc in Mechanical/Chemical/Physical/Electrochemical Engineering
  • At least 5 years of practical experience from Li-Ion Battery Cell development at battery company.
  • Experience in specific customer projects
  • Experience from Cell Design and development of Lithium Ion cells is a must.
  • Extensive experience of Battery devices fabrication and testing
  • Work experience with Cylindrical/Prismatic batteries and more in the specific components as well such as Separators/Electrodes
  • Experience from R&D laboratory.
  • Experience with Lithium-ion battery performance and safety.
  • Strong background from technical culture and proven engineering excellence.
  • Must have worked in a multi-cultural environment and have a successful history with International working culture.

Specific Skills/Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of cathode and anode materials
  • Excellent English skills(both written and oral)
  • Ability to work under high pressure and tight deadlines, excellent time management.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment, as well as independently.
  • Ability to work in a high profile and often high pressured international environment (start-up).
