Electrical Design Engineer

We are a journey of continuous growth – now looking for our next star – a passionate Electrical Design Engineer. This position reports to Director of Engineering and will work in Pompano Beach, FL.

About the position

As an Electrical Design Engineer in the Pompano Beach team, you will be involved in designing, developing and improving Climate Control products for the Marine industry – specifically the electrical & electronics hardware & software required to power & control these products – ensuring expected product performance & seamless integration into the customer environment to meet or exceed customer expectations.

Typically, this role will focus support for one or more of the following product groups: Self-Contained Systems (direct expansion heat pumps w/ integrated condensing & evaporator units), Split Systems (direct expansion heat pumps w/ separate condensing & evaporator units), Chilled Water (heat pumps w/a secondary chilled water loop for cabin conditioning) Systems, & Custom Refrigeration/Ice-making equipment.

Your main responsibilities

  • Product Development (PD) Focus
    • Product Design – Electrical / Electronic hardware design, development & improvement
    • Product Design – Design & development of firmware / software architecture / specifications as well as modification & improvement of existing firmware / software
    • Project Management – supporting efforts (PD & CFT) to achieve successful implementation of tasks per established Project milestones / goals
  • Design & Development Tasks
    • Own technical portion of the full development cycle, from concept (requirements analysis, feasibility studies, prototype design & design verification, etc.), through launch (design release, industrialization, product validation, SOP, etc.), as well as post-launch product improvement activities
    • Prepare product design & documentation for new & existing components & assemblies, including Specifications, schematics, drawings, component selection, sizing, & layout, & performance optimization of aforementioned products in accordance with Dometic / ISO9001 requirements / procedures
    • Oversee validation tests, including performance, reliability (e.g. HALT/HASS), & industry / regulatory (safety) compliance testing – creating all required test plans, and writing / reviewing / approving reports as appropriate technical owner of the full development cycle, from development – requirements analysis, concept design & design verification, through launch – industrialization, validation, & production start-up, as well as post-launch product improvement activities
  • Cross-Functional Team (CFT) Activities
    • Act as technical lead for the cross-functional product development team, leading and/or supporting the CFT for key project tasks (e.g. design reviews, BOM management, cost modeling, make/buy analyses, DFMA studies, DFMEA, DVP&R, & development schedules and project reports)
    • Effectively support & interact with offsite resources – e.g software development team, test labs, etc. –to ensure continuance of the product development process
    • Represent Dometic Marine in customer / supplier interactions, including troubleshooting, problem solving, line audits, trade shows, presentations, etc.
    • Support manufacturing, quality and technical service teams with respect to issue resolution & quality / warranty improvement

Skills & Requirements

A suitable background would be a solid experience within xxx and xxx **** – as well as the following qualifications and experiences:

  • Appropriate qualifications (University, Technical Institute, Training, etc.) in Electrical, Computer, Mechatronics or related Engineering discipline
  • Relevant industry or product design experience (5+ years preferred) in electrical/electronic product design which may include internships or co-op work
  • Experience with engineering tools & techniques (PDCA, APQP, DFSS, System V, DFMEA, DVP&R, DFMA, & ERP systems (BOM creation & management), etc. is strongly recommended
  • Experience with Electronics CAD modeling (e.g. Altium Designer, etc.) & communications protocols (NMEA 2K CAN, AirNet, Scheiber, ModBus, RS232, etc.) is strongly recommended
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint and PM tools (MS Project, JIRA / Confluence, etc.) and the ability to learn other applications quickly
  • Familiarity with firmware programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Python, etc.) and assembly for embedded controllers such as Freescale, NXP, and ARM
  • Familiarity with HVACR equipment & control systems
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including relevant industry functional & safety standards (e.g. SAE, ASTM, ABYC, ASHRAE, ISO, NMEA, UL, CE, etc.) preferred
  • Familiarity with electronics hardware manufacturing processes and fabrication capabilities, preferably with ability to audit and improve such processes
  • Familiarity with electronics test & measurement equipment – multi-meter, oscilloscope, EMC chamber, etc.
  • Familiarity with & use of common bench & hand tools
