Do you want to develop your expertise in AI and human-computer interaction to make a difference to actual patients and save lives? We are looking for an industrial PhD student, a position combining the best of two worlds: advancing the frontier of human knowledge while keeping an industrial focus on creating real products for healthcare.

About the position

Sectra is one of the world’s leading providers of healthcare IT systems for diagnostic data. This industrial PhD student position is part of the Sectra Research Department, within a project focusing on precision medicine in breast cancer.

The potential of AI agents as members of medical teams is clear, but equally clear is that we still lack methods for AI-assisted expert teams that ensure both high productivity and robust quality in this high-stakes setting. New data science methods in AI-centered human-computer interaction are needed, where scientific expertise is matched with clinical prerequisites in an industrial context.

Your team and environment

The Research Department is responsible for developing knowledge, methods and prototypes to pave the way for product development. You will work in a team of scientists and closely collaborate with academic and healthcare professionals worldwide as well as with Sectra’s many domain experts.

The academic setting is with internationally leading groups at Linköping University, within the division of Media and Information Technology and the Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization. This industrial PhD project is part of the interdisciplinary WASP-DDLS NEST project AID4BC, targeting data-driven multimodal methods to enable true precision diagnostics throughout the breast cancer pathway. AID4BC includes four leading universities in Sweden and is likely the only constellation globally having access to large (>10,000 patients) matched multimodal data across radiology, pathology and molecular profiling and clinical data.

This position is supported by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). WASP is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems. The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish society and industry

Life at Sectra

At Sectra, you will be offered:

  • The opportunity to work with technology that is beneficial for life
  • A rewarding and challenging workplace where you work in teams with smart and talented people just like you
  • An organization where have a real opportunity to make a difference
  • An international environment with the opportunity to work in, or with, other countries and cultures

Specifically, this position offers:

  • The opportunity to learn about, and eventually push the boundaries of, key technology areas of our time
  • The opportunity to contribute to a leading area of precision medicine: agentive AI for multidisciplinary medical teams, with focus on diagnostic data (radiology, pathology, genomics) in breast cancer
  • The chance to contribute to user-oriented innovations, transferring knowledge and prototypes to Sectra’s product development teams
  • Participation in a PhD student training program at Linköping University and the WASP program, a strong environment with other students and researchers in visualization and AI
  • After four years, obtaining a PhD degree

This is an opportunity out of the ordinary. Intense efforts will be needed at times, and high flexibility is required. We are looking for someone who sees the multifaceted challenges of this position in a positive light, as a path to a rewarding, extraordinary professional life.
