JVM Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin)

We’re looking for a JVM Backend Developer - skilled in or eager to learn Kotlin - to join the Payment Gateway team and strengthen the backbone of Schibsted digital subscription platform.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Schibsted & Vend Polska is a joint venture between two leading Nordic entities - a major media house, Schibsted, and a dynamic marketplace leader, Vend. With over 300 software engineers in Kraków and Gdańsk, we deliver high-quality technological solutions that power both organizations’ operations and innovations.

At Schibsted & Vend Polska, we value diversity, collaboration, growth, and psychological safety. We believe that every voice matters and that innovation thrives when people feel trusted and empowered.

ABOUT THE PROJECT & TEAM

The Payment Gateway is a core system supporting Schibsted’s digital newspapers, processing over 1 million transactions per month. It delivers the central Payment API used across the Schibsted ecosystem, ensuring seamless payments via cards, mobile, and invoices.

Our backend stack is JVM-based (Kotlin and Java), with tests written in Groovy (Spock) and Kotest. Services run on AWS (EC2, RDS, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB, MSK/Kafka, Lambdas) and Kubernetes, with infrastructure managed via Terraform. We live by the principle “You build it - you run it.”

You’ll join a 5-person backend team in Kraków, collaborating closely with a product manager in Stockholm. We work in a culture of shared ownership, code quality, and continuous learning - with pair and mob programming as standard practice.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin) in the Payment Gateway team, you will:

  • Design, build, and maintain JVM-based backend services.
  • Work with modern AWS infrastructure and automated CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate in all stages of development - from design and coding to testing and deployment.
  • Collaborate across Poland, Sweden, and Norway.
  • Contribute to a strong engineering culture through code reviews, pair programming, and testing excellence.

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Shape and evolve a high-scale Payment Gateway used across the Nordics.
  • Work with diverse areas of the JVM ecosystem, microservices, serverless, and event-driven architectures.
  • Enjoy Learning Fridays every second week.
  • Collaborate in a distributed, international environment with real decision-making impact.
  • Thrive in a supportive, growth-oriented culture built on trust and psychological safety.

ABOUT YOU

You have:

  • Experience with Java or Kotlin
  • Familiarity with TDD and testing frameworks (e.g. Spock, Kotest).
  • Strong communication skills in English.
  • Curiosity and adaptability to learn new technologies.
  • A proactive mindset - you question assumptions and suggest improvements.

It’s great if you also have:

  • Experience with Spring / Spring Boot.
  • Hands-on knowledge of AWS.
  • Interest in functional programming.
  • Familiarity with event sourcing and streaming architectures.

TYPE OF WORK

We work in a hybrid model - combining collaboration in our Kraków office (2 days per week) with the flexibility of remote work on other days.

OUR CULTURE

You’ll be part of a community that values trust, learning, and collaboration.
At Schibsted & Vend Polska, we unite diverse perspectives to build smart, reliable, and sustainable technology - supporting Schibsted mission of empowering independent journalism across the Nordics.
