Job Description

We are a disruptive, sustainable materials startup producing one of the highest quality lignin from unutilized biomass. We're not just innovating—we're building a greener future.

Now, we're looking for an innovative Process Engineer to help us lead the change. Are you the one? Please share your application with us today!

Who are we?

At Bright Materia, we have a new Lignin production process that utilizes wasted biomass from forestry, agriculture, and several other biomass materials to produce a high-quality material that can replace fossil equivalent in the market today in a wide range of applications.

Why is this important?

From skincare products in the cosmetics industry to the manufacturing of batteries to construction materials, the need for high-quality lignin is exponentially increasing across the globe. So, offering a sustainable, high-quality material will disrupt the market and accelerate the green transition.

What have we achieved?

Our solution is based on years of research from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and we have filed three distinct patents for our material production processes. We have shown the scalability going from lab-scale to small pilot scale.

We are a part of the largest Nordic startup accelerator at Sting in Stockholm and have recently closed an investment round with VOYAGERS Climate-Tech Fund, KTH Holding, and Vinnova with ongoing grand and soft funding extending our runway towards commercialization.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a Process Engineer with experience from the process industry to join us, who will have a key role in simulation and analysis related to the process, including designing and scaling the process. You will also take part in experimental work related to the process. The role begins as a part-time position at around 50%, with the potential to expand as the company grows.

Skills & Requirements

Requirements

  • Experience in process-related simulations and analysis
  • Experience in process design
  • Experience in upscaling processes
  • Hands-on practical experience in building and operating processes equipment
  • Passion for sustainability

Why join us?

Impact: We believe we have a great opportunity and an important role to join our company in this early stage and shape its future as we envision an ambitious goal of becoming market leaders in sustainable materials.

Solid Research: We have years of research and development backing us with trade secrets that give us an unfair advantage and a sound board, advisors, and promising early customers giving us a good head start.

Sustainability: We are accelerating the green transition by using waste biomaterials and producing lignin that can disrupt multiple industries that rely on it.

Are you passionate about engineering and sustainability, and would you like to be part of building a company? Send in your application today!

About the company

Bright Materia is a spin-off company from Wallenberg Wood Science Center at KTH Royal Institute of Technology that provides high-quality, user-customized lignin from waste biomass. This enables bio-based materials in various applications in several billion markets. We have a strong USP and have shown the scalability of our process. We are now planning to introduce our product to the market and are heading for further upscaling of our process.

Bright Materia has developed a new process technology to produce user-customized lignin with preserved structure from unutilized biomass as raw material. With our innovative process technology, a high-quality sulfur-free and odorless lignin with high purity and bright color is extracted from waste biomass. Up to 30 % of biomass constitutes lignin that is burnt today. We aim to reduce carbon dioxide emission and the use of fossil resources by producing lignin suitable as a fossil-free equivalent, thereby binding the carbon into new biobased materials. Lignin has naturally amazing features, such as natural antioxidant and UV-absorbing properties. These properties are advantageous in high-value applications, and we see that our lignin is a material that can be used by several industries, such as the beauty industry, among others.
