Product Designer, Electrical

We are on a journey of continuous growth – now looking for our next star – a passionate Product Designer within our Engineering capability. This position reports to the Engineering Manager for thermal products and will work in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

About the position

As a Product Designer in the Engineering team, you will focus on product development including design, verification, validation, launch and support of products and components used in thermal controls. You will have the opportunity to develop embedded electronic solutions within mechatronic products to meet cost and functional targets.

Your main responsibilities

  • Prepare design documentation for new products and components such as PCBA engineering specifications, drawings, and test reports.
  • Design products and components utilizing prescribed tools such as QFD, CAD, DFMA and DFMEA’s in accordance with Dometic and ISO9001 requirements and procedures.
  • Participate in the full development cycle, from requirements analysis, design, development, implementation, validation, documentation, and ongoing support.
  • Circuit design including schematic, layout, and component selection.
  • Support real-time firmware development team with microcontroller selection.
  • Hold design reviews and conduct validation tests (environmental, EMC, HASS / HALT, etc.).
  • Maintain Bill of Materials for electronic assemblies.
  • Participate in “make versus buy” decisions for components and/or assemblies.
  • Provide estimates of product cost and development effort. Participate in creating development schedules and then work to these schedules.
  • Develop project plans, coordinate activities and report on project status.
  • Work in multi-function new product development teams, including program/product management, manufacturing engineering, supply chain management and production.
  • Interact with customers and suppliers and represent Dometic LVA
  • Assist in applications support and troubleshooting as required.

Skills & Requirements

A suitable background would be a solid experience within Electrical Design and Circuit Design – as well as the following qualifications and experiences:

  • University or Technical Institute qualifications in Electrical, Computer, Electro-Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Proficient with Altium Designer, or equivalent CAD program.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office programs including Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint; and, the ability to learn other applications quickly.
  • Proven experience with analog, power, and digital electronic circuit design for embedded systems.
  • Experience with high-speed digital design.
  • Strong understanding of hardware/software interface challenges and understanding of hardware system designs.
  • Proven experience with full electronic and firmware lifecycles for high volume production.
  • Experience with scripting languages (Python) to accelerate electronics design and analysis.
  • Displays aptitude for utilizing LTSpice in various applications.
  • Experience with Matlab / Simulink, Ansys, and FEMM is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable of sensors and various linear actuators, especially electric motors.
  • Working knowledge of safety regulations (UL, CSA, CE and other regulatory requirements).
  • Working knowledge of communications interfaces (ie. SPI, I2C, CAN, RS232, LVDS)
  • Experience with EMC test equipment, hand-soldering, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers
  • Experience applying industry standards such as SAE, ASTM and ISO.

In addition to the above, familiarity with the following is preferred.

  • Familiar with digital signal processing techniques in embedded C and/or HDL.
  • Familiar with firmware programming languages such as C, C++, and assembly for embedded controllers such as Freescale, NXP, and ARM.
  • Familiar with electromagnetic compatibility and data acquisition equipment and programming (National Instruments and LabView).
  • Familiar with QFD, Design and Process FMEAs.
  • Familiar with brushless DC motors and control, various sensors, and amplifiers.
  • Familiar with lithium batteries, battery chargers, battery management, invertors, and DC-DC convertors
