At Heart Aerospace we develop the ES-30, a regional hybrid-electric airplane with a capacity of 30 passengers, an electric zero-emission range of 200 km and an extended hybrid range of 400 km. Heart is targeting type certification of the ES-30 by the end of the decade.

We are now looking for a Senior Stress Engineer to join our Airframe & interiors team in Gothenburg. Do you have experience with expertise in composite structures from concept design through manufacturing and want to contribute to a more sustainable future?

Your mission

The Senior Stress Engineer will have a critical role in the design, analysis, and optimization of lightweight composite structures, focusing on advanced manufacturing technologies like Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) and Vacuum-Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM).

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform detailed stress and structural analysis of composite aircraft components such as wings, fuselage sections, empennage, and secondary structures, ensuring all analysis meets aerospace certification standards.
  • Use advanced finite element analysis (FEA) tools (NASTRAN, Hypermesh) to simulate load conditions and predict structural behavior.
  • Work with design teams to optimize composite structures for performance, manufacturing and weight reduction.
  • Recommend changes to laminate stacking sequences, fiber orientations, and ply layup to meet performance criteria and facilitate Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) or other advanced composite manufacturing processes.
  • Liaise with design, manufacturing, materials engineering, and quality teams to ensure composite structures are designed and analyzed in accordance with project specifications.
  • Provide technical guidance during the manufacturing process, addressing composite layup, curing processes (e.g. VARTM), and inspection methods.
  • Prepare stress reports and documentation for certification authorities.
  • Support full-scale testing of composite components, including static, fatigue, and environmental tests.
  • Correlate FEA models with physical test results, refining analysis as necessary.

You will report to the Head Airframe & Interiors and your place of work will be at our main office located in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Skills & Requirements

  • 10+ years experience in stress analysis of composite materials in the aerospace industry.
  • Proficiency in FEA tools like NASTRAN, Hypermesh, HyperX.
  • Specialized coursework or certification in composite structures, stress analysis, or finite element methods is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of composite material behavior, laminate theory, and ply-by-ply failure criteria.
  • Familiarity with aerospace design software (e.g., CATIA, Siemens NX and Fibersim) for composite layup and analysis.
  • A proactive and forward-thinking approach to challenges with ability to develop novel and creative solutions alongside emerging technologies. Thrives in environments where conventional solutions might not be sufficient and enjoys the exploration of new ideas to optimize performance and efficiency
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, particularly in applying stress analysis to real-world designs.
  • Strong communication and report-writing skills for technical documentation and coordination with cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills in English
  • Eagerness to work with others
  • Passion for aircraft and electrification of the aviation industry

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

We recommend you submit your application in English as soon as possible as selection and interviews are held continually.
