Thesis work - Advanced Data Management in Automotive Systems

Background:
In the evolving landscape of automotive technology, we face a critical challenge. Currently, when a Virtual Machine (VM) crashes, saving its state (core) is not feasible due to limited flash memory and the high cost of data streaming over paid connections.
Our goal is to enable the uploading of these cores to the backend, allowing customers to access the core data from field-crashed systems and potentially continue running the VM locally in the future.
Scope:
This thesis work involves a comprehensive investigation into data compression techniques, both standard algorithms and custom (lossy and lossless are to be considered), to address our data management challenges. The project will include:
- Analyzing the structure of a core.
- Evaluating compression efficacy using standard (with and without custom dictionaries) and custom algorithms.
- Identifying core components that are essential for saving.
- Determining parts of the core that can be discarded or regenerated later.
Challenges:
- Developing effective compression strategies for core dump data.
- Ensuring integrity and accessibility of the core data for backend upload and customer retrieval.
- Balancing the trade-offs between data retention, compression efficacy, and transmission costs.
