HOW IT WORKS

  • Get Matched: Apply and get matched with a VFA startup partner in your area of interest.
  • Get Immersed:
    • Part-time (unavailable for this role): De-risk your potential transition by spending an initial 3 months in this role, part-time. During this time, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the team, experience the company culture, and evaluate whether it makes sense as a potential long-term option.
    • Full-time: For those actively looking for a role, who are ready to dive right in, you can skip ahead to the next step.
  • Get Hired: VFA startup partners have the opportunity to make full-time offers to candidates directly after the matching process or after VFA's trial-to-hire model.

Partner: Numida

Numida is a rapidly growing digital finance institution in East Africa, dedicated to serving micro and small businesses (MSBs). Utilizing proprietary technology and credit processes, Numida provides growth and working capital to verified MSBs, resulting in high portfolio yields and a significant positive impact on borrowers' livelihoods.

Through the Numida mobile app, small business owners can conveniently apply for unsecured short-term business loans by digitally submitting evidence of business ownership and activity.

Numida’s proprietary due diligence process, which combines machine validation with human review, enables lending decisions to be made in less than 24 hours. Loan principals are disbursed digitally via mobile money. Borrowers then begin reporting their daily financials—such as sales, expenses, and stock purchases—while repaying their loans and tracking their next loan limit. Most subsequent loans are disbursed automatically.

Engagement Description

Numida is looking for a highly analytical Financial Planning Analyst to play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s financial strategy and driving key business decisions. This role is integral to Numida’s growth, requiring a deep understanding of financial modeling, statistics, and mathematics, along with the ability to collaborate closely with data and operations teams.

In this role, you will be responsible for building and refining financial and loan models, balancing cost-effectiveness with operational efficiency.

This role involves both client-side financial management—focusing on growth and credit operations—and internal financial planning, working directly with the CEO to enhance growth strategies, assess funding requirements, manage profitability, and improve overall financial management.

The ideal candidate will bring strong financial modeling skills, particularly in SQL, and will not be confined to traditional finance roles, instead demonstrating a proactive approach to solving complex financial challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Operations Teams: Provide FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) support to operations teams, focusing on optimizing efficiency, driving growth, and enhancing reporting and metrics.
  • Drive Financial Planning: Prepare and refine budget and forecasting models, conduct variance analyses, and contribute to long-term planning, risk assessments, and periodic/ad hoc reporting.
  • Proactive Improvement: Identify and investigate variances between forecasts, budgets, and prior-year expenses, proactively seeking and implementing opportunities for financial improvement.
  • Collaborate on Business Solutions: Develop innovative solutions to business challenges and work closely with local finance and management teams to set and achieve metrics, goals, and conduct business reviews.
  • Streamline Reporting Processes: Assist in automating the consolidated reporting and forecasting processes, ensuring greater accuracy and efficiency.
  • Lead Strategic Initiatives: Take charge of corporate projects and initiatives that have a significant impact across the entire organization.
  • Deliver Insightful Analysis: Create presentations that offer deep analysis, clearly identify action items, and effectively frame decisions for leadership.
  • Foster Strong Relationships: Build and maintain effective relationships with business partners and cross-functional teams at all levels of the organisation, ensuring collaboration and alignment.

Skills & Requirements

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a Financial Analyst or in a similar role, with a strong focus on financial modeling, statistical analysis, and variance reporting.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in Excel, with advanced mathematical and statistical skills.
    • Strong financial modeling experience, particularly in building financial and loan models.
    • Proficiency in SQL is critical.
  • Analytical Expertise: Demonstrated ability to conduct deep financial analysis, develop complex financial models, and deliver actionable insights.
  • Collaboration Skills: Proven ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, particularly in data and operations, to achieve shared goals.
  • Financial Management: Experience managing both client-side financial operations (e.g., growth and credit) and internal financial planning.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks, drive projects across the organization, and adapt to a dynamic, growing environment.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., ACCA, CPA, CFA, CMA) are a plus.
  • Location: Preferred location within East Africa, ideally within ±2 hours of the Kampala time zone.
