Network and OT Specialist

A bit about the role:

An opportunity to join a growing business and take responsibility for managing IT networks, satellite communication systems and on-board operational technology in conjunction with our partners/vendors. The role of Network and OT (Operational Technology) Specialist is instrumental in ensuring optimal performance of all maritime operational technical devices and communication services in cooperation with the ship management teams. This includes, but is not limited to: follow-up of all incident tickets and service requests, management of all network and OT devices, documentation, planning and execution of maintenance, coordination of key initiatives and upgrades/refresh of equipment. There is likely to be occasional ship travel included as part of the role as some activities may not be performed remotely. There is also an on-call element to the role since our ships sail in multiple regions and time zones globally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintains network performance by performing network monitoring and analysis, performance tuning, troubleshooting, incident resolution and escalation of problems to vendor.
  • Proactively evaluates network performance issues including availability, utilisation, throughput, goodput, and latency; planning and executing the selection, installation, configuration, and testing of equipment; defining network policies and procedures; establishing connections and firewalls.
  • Maintains and supports critical operational technology onboard (PBX systems, DECT, VoWifi, CCTV and automation systems)​.
  • Liaises with our partner for Satellite Communication issues and regularly reviews and optimises subscriptions to ensure best possible service taking into consideration regional and industry impacts.
  • Responds to Service and Change Requests as well as supporting new Demand initiatives. Ensures all changes to the network are tested, approved and documented.
  • Creates knowledge base articles and provides support to service desk team in order to increase % first-time fix rate.
  • Creates and maintains network related documentation to improve the overall efficiency of IT support processes​​.
  • "Supports 'Ship dockings' by ensuring that the network and OT-related scope is properly planned and executed, requiring travel to various locations in coordination with the IT Maritime Project Manager. This includes tasks and new initiatives involving network, telephony, and CCTV systems.

Skills & Requirements

  • Basic networking/cabling & fibre skills
  • Network architecture and engineering knowledge Experience managing Fortigate/Fortinet technology
  • Knowledge of Cisco technologies (CISCO wireless technologies incl Meraki & Cisco Controller based products/ Cisco ISR/ASR, Cisco ASA firewalls)
  • Experience with Azure networking & tools
  • Knowledge of WAN technologies & routing protocols ((EIGRP, OSPF, BGP)
  • CCNP certification
  • CCNA or AZ-700
  • Wireshark experience
  • Knowledge of CCTV, PBX and Node-Red or similar automation platforms is desirable
  • ITIL Foundation V4 / ComTIA A+ or comparable certification/training​ desirable
  • IT relevant degree educated or equivalent experience​ managing enterprise networks​
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a physical/virtual team
  • Ability to collaborate with non-technical users
  • Ability to resolve challenging technical issues
