Production Engineer - Battery Cell Manufacturing
Are you a driven engineer with a great interest in battery technology? Step into the world of Battery Cell Manufacturing and be part of a team that's shaping the future of technology and innovation!

We are building a state-of-the-art Gigafactory that will be one of the largest cell production facilities in Europe. We are now looking for Production Engineers to join our Engineering team.

Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery.

Together, we have formed a joint venture, NOVO Energy, to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo cars.

Our Engineering team is coalition of specialists, engineers and technical project managers across a broad range of technical disciplines. Together they work toward the shared goal of scaling and industrializing the production of our lithium-ion battery technology that will help Volvo transform into a pure electric car manufacturer.

The team is currently focused on designing, planning and equipping a world class Gigafactory in time for start of production in 2026. This is an immense undertaking requiring the joint efforts and contributions of engineers working cross-functionally, with the ultimate goal of producing the world’s most sustainable lithium-ion batteries.

What you will do
In this role you will be responsible for achieving and maintaining Key Performance Indicators for a dedicated area of battery cell manufacturing equipment during ramp-up and production in our NOVO site in Gothenburg. One of the following areas below will be your main scope, depending on your previous experience and interest:

  • Electrode
  • Cell Assembly
  • Formation and Ageing

You will also support with suppliers and cross functional NOVO teams for a specific area of battery cell manufacturing equipment, from acceptance test at the supplier site all the way to ramp-up and start of production in our NOVO site in Gothenburg. This role will initially be assigned to the Engineering Department and later transferred to the Manufacturing or Quality Department in NOVO Energy, on a shift bases, for ramp-up and start of production in our NOVO site in Gothenburg.

Before start of Production your key responsibilities will include:

  • Support design reviews and FMEAs with suppliers and approve machine design concepts, technical drawings and documentation
  • Support the definition and release of training, standards and instructions for manufacturing processes based on the trials and lessons learned performed on the way
  • Support commissioning activities on site, from installation and during ramp-up
  • Support for the battery cell manufacturing equipment handover from the Process Team to the Production Team, reviewing and accepting the documentation provided by the Process Team

After start of Production your key responsibilities will include:

  • After Start of Production, responsible for achieving and maintaining Key Performance Indicators (technical availability, yield, etc) for the assigned equipment
  • Supporting in mass production together with the Operations Team, which means working irregular working hours over a period of time
  • Leading projects to improve and optimize Key Performance Indicators for the equipment during production, identifying root causes for top loses and applying corrective actions for increasing production performances.
  • Actively participating and sharing all relevant information within a cross-functional team regularly.

Skills & Requirements
We see that you are a curious and persistent team player with a track record of leading improvement projects in a production factory environment. You approach problem-solving with a “can-do” attitude, discipline and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

  • M.Sc. in Engineering or higher degree in chemical, mechanical, industrial or electrical engineering or equivalent

  • Experience from scaling production in a fast-growing environment - ideally in the Battery, Food, Pharma, Paper & Pulp, Semiconductor or similar industry
  • Experience and interest in design and commissioning
  • Detailed root cause analysis skills
  • Familiar with OEE (Overall Equipment Efficiency) metric and other relevant Production Key Performance Index
  • Familiar with lean, 5S, Poka-Yoke, Six Sigma method is a plus
