We offer you a unique opportunity to become one of the pioneers at our battery gigafactory in Germany, offering a head-start to boost your battery career in Sweden during the initial phase of your employment with us. Through our 12-18 months Battery Excellence program you will have the chance to delve into various aspects of the battery manufacturing process in Sweden and ultimately emerge as one of the first engineers at our Heide facility.

As a dedicated Process Engineer you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing processes for our Gigafactory Northvolt Drei in Heide, located in the northern part of Germany. By joining our team, you will be tasked with defining, launching, and continually enhancing highly specialized battery manufacturing processes.

About the job
As subject matter expert in minimum one of the underlying process steps in battery production (Electrode, Cell Assembly, Formation & Ageing) you take your understanding of current equipment and processes and utilize it to pave the way for future upgrades and designs. By taking care of reliability, availability, and quality of manufacturing processes, you will interfere with launch, integration, operations, equipment automation teams to solve problems, improve manufacturability, and implement continuous improvement. You will work with quality engineering to compile and evaluate data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. We will ask you to collect failures and lessons learned also from other sites and from suppliers, use the know-how for training material, standard operating procedures, and best practices available to all colleagues assigned to working with your equipment.

About the team
Your journey includes strong collaboration with worldwide suppliers and cross functional NV teams in Västerås and Skellefteå, Sweden, including times of learning and further improving your skills and competences in these locations. You will be part of our international delivery team being incubated in Sweden and moving with the developed equipment into Heide, Germany. You have the unique opportunity to focus on deploying the next generation of high-volume battery manufacturing equipment following its life cycle from design and development during and after purchase order through FAT at supplier site to installation and commissioning until start of production and even beyond.

Based on our culture and values we are willing to build a fast-learning organization. You can contribute with your strong ability to network and build reliable relationships with internal and external domain experts throughout this amazing journey.

Our goal for you is to hand over high-performing and digitally integrated equipment to our production engineering and manufacturing departments. This challenging role will allow you to take responsibility and further build your professional career by building a strong team around you, creating structures, methods, and tools to scale and train our production and maintenance teams to meet our ambitious timeline.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and own detailed design and process engineering from PO to FAT and SAT for manufacturing equipment & belonging operational processes

  • Lead design reviews and FMEAs with suppliers and approve machine design concepts (drawings, documentation); identify and address opportunities to ensure continuous equipment improvement and to meet quality, technical specifications and CE standards

  • Plan and execute hands-on technical work using statistical techniques (DoE, SPC) at supplier and NV sites to continuously improve our manufacturing equipment

  • Own and lead commissioning activities on site and support handover to production engineering and manufacturing including writing procedures and providing training and coaching to other manufacturing associates

  • Be hands on with automated production equipment, become the expert in process-product interactions and define the next wave of engineering workforce to secure our ambitious installation and start-up timeline

The person we are looking for is driven, caring and structured. Curious, technically educated, and preferably with a strong problem-solving background. Experience and interest in equipment design, process development and commissioning. You thrive by leading others and work towards common goals. You are used to a high paced work environment and got good time management skills.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
