We are building a state-of-the-art facility and a world-class team of technologists for R&D into next-generation battery cells, and we are now looking for R&D Battery Analyst Engineers to make it happen. Are you into analytics and love working with data-driven development to solve real-world problems? Then you should join our team, together we enable the future of energy.

Volvo Cars is one of the most well-known and respected car brands in the world. Northvolt is a leading supplier of sustainable, high-quality battery cells and systems, dedicated to delivering the world’s greenest lithium-ion battery. Together, we have formed a joint venture, NOVO Energy, to power the next generation of pure electric Volvo and Polestar cars.

We are now looking for two Analyst Engineers with different focus to our R&D Engineering team. In close collaboration with the Materials Tech and Cell Design Teams we develop cutting-edge technology, backed by the support, investment, talent, and expertise of Volvo and Northvolt. With a diverse and global team, we foster a dynamic and enjoyable work environment. We have fun while bringing a new generation of mobility to life.

What you will do
You will be responsible for the process development and fabrication of advanced high-energy density Li-ion battery cells. Depending on your background and interest, you will either work on Electrodes, synthesizing new electrode materials or Cell Assembly, assembling coin cells, single and multi-layer prototype pouch cells. You will conduct systematic processing experiments using different electrode and cell components to identify key parameters for achieving high product quality and electrochemical performance. Next to running your process, you will also be using several advanced analytical equipment to assess the battery cell quality throughout the development process.

Your work will mainly be conducted hands-on in a laboratory/prototype battery cell production environment with analytical equipment (rheometer, viscometer, BET, PSA, tensile tester, optical microscope, tensile tester, XRD, SEM etc.) that you will be frequently using to assess the product quality. You will also handle troubleshooting and resolve technical issues associated with process and analytical equipment.

You will be responsible for documenting processing parameters and communicating key learnings to cross-functional teams. In this role, you will also have the opportunity to read and review technology proceedings and papers to broaden your knowledge, project future trends and propose directions in energy storage technology development.

Skills & Requirements
You are an enthusiastic Battery Analyst Engineer who takes ownership and is eager to collaborate to achieve great results. You are curious, proactive with a “can do” attitude and an eye for detail.

  • MSc. degree or higher in Chemistry, Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related.
  • Scientific background and knowledge in energy storage materials and/or electrochemistry, applied electrochemistry or electrochemical engineering.
  • Previous industrial or academic laboratory experience in the fabrication of battery cells is a strong plus. Either from electrodes including slurry mixing, coating and calendaring processes or from assembling cells.
  • Experience in material characterization and analytical techniques, such as rheology, surface area, particle size, tensile testing, optical/electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction etc.
  • Experience in developing processes, standards, procedures and documentation in an efficient way.
  • Ability to design and execute new material evaluation and define the correlation between material property and electrode performance.
  • Ability to identify root-causes and troubleshooting to solve issues through a data-driven approach.
