Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a Mechanical & Process Utilities Design Manager to join our passionate Engineering team in Heide, Germany.


You will play a lead role in the Project Engineering team that will drive the construction of our new battery factory in Heide, Germany. Built in multiple phases over 5+ years the factory represents a multi-billion Euro investment project. Together with your colleagues from the Program team you will be accountable to lead mechanical designs to deliver on company targets and in line with customer expectations.

About the job

Responsible to ensure that the Mechanical & Process Utilities design follows the Northvolt requirements during the detailed design and execution phase of the gigafactory.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Line Manager for the discipline of Mechanical and Process Engineers
  • Verification/performance of heat and mass balance calculations
  • Reviewing the designs of external design contractors
  • Responsible for ensuring consistency across the designs between the different projects
  • Ensuring internal Northvolt stakeholder alignment
  • Promoting value engineering for the overall project
  • Participating in Northvolt project lessons learned sessions

Skills & Requirements

We believe that you have:

  • Bachelor or master's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • Familiarity with both Process and Mechanical Engineering principles and significant experience/expertise in one of the two disciplines
  • (Ideally) 15+ years experience in Advanced Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, or in a similar industry
  • Fluency in English (German would also be highly advantageous)
  • Computer literacy (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio)
  • Have designed or lead development and construction of robust Mechanical, Piping & Process Utilities systems to meet demanding requirements on reliability, availability, and maintainability
  • Experience with the design of compressed air systems and waste water treatment would be a big advantage
  • Experience in the design of large scale heating and cooling generation systems for central utility buildings in an industrial application
  • Strong experience with doing heat and mass balance calculations (Excel and Aspen would be important tools)

Bonus points for:

  • Familiarity with German and European laws and standards
  • Valuable (but not required) if fluency in other languages, including German.
  • Chartered or Professional Engineer status is preferred.
  • Previous experience with large scale projects is strongly desirable
