We are looking for senior process engineers to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. For the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and phase out carbon sources, we need a lot of sustainably produced batteries. To minimise the carbon footprint of these batteries, Northvolt is producing and developing in-house cathode active material (CAM). We now need the right people to make a difference! By joining us, you will be a key player in establishing CAM and contribute to building, starting up and expanding the cathode part of Europe’s first and coming battery factories.

Cathode production is a chemical process. Northvolt has already established cathode plants in Skellefteå and Västerås in Sweden, with new projects being established within and outside Sweden. As a senior process engineer in our Cathode Process Development and Engineering team, you will play an important role in the interface with equipment suppliers, engineering contractors, chemical experts, environmental engineers, production teams and Northvolt factory design teams to efficiently integrate the latest cathode chemistry and technology into existing and new factory design.

The person we are looking for is a team player, curious and eager to learn. You will get the chance to have a real impact on our success story and see the results of your work. Our organization requires and values great self-discipline and talents who make things happen. You will develop and apply deep understanding of the cathode manufacturing process and create new guidelines for your team. You will also drive process improvements and develop roadmaps.

The Process Engineering team is working both in Västerås and Skellefteå in Sweden. In Västerås, we focus on developing and industrialising Northvolt’s next generation li-ion battery cathode material and process design. In Skellefteå, you will be a key member in the team that executes and drives the start-up, ramp-up and expansion of the first full-scale Northvolt production plant.

About the job

CAM production is divided into four different process areas. In the CAM Dissolution process area, we are currently looking for senior process engineers to work with research and development as well as process engineering:

Senior Process Engineer – Technology R&D

In the Technology R&D role, you will be working with research and development of technology and process improvements for existing and future Dissolution Cathode Active Material production facilities, including:

  • Collaboration with Raw Materials team to identify new, more sustainable, raw material sources and validate these as raw materials for CAM production
  • Development of Dissolution processes to fit new raw material and new process needs
  • Cooperate with vendors and universities for R&D and building long term relationship.
  • Explore and evaluate new technologies for dissolving, to secure and extend Northvolt’s technology and cost leadership.
  • Manage the timeline of technology upgrades and present your results to management levels and other project stakeholders.
  • Industrialization of dissolution process and concepts to meet long term objectives.
  • Collaborate with Electrode Validation, Material R&D and Procurement to execute and update Technology Development Roadmap

Senior Process Engineer – Process Engineering

In the Process Engineering role, you will be working as technical authority in process engineering and commissioning of Dissolution process plants, including:

  • Lead interface with equipment suppliers, engineering contractors, material experts, environmental engineers, production teams, procurement and project management to efficiently integrate the latest Dissolution technology into the factory design in all project phases, both brownfield and greenfield.
  • Lead and participate in vendor inspections, FATs and SATs to ensure that process equipment conforms to functional requirements.
  • Ensure that process design conforms to all safety and environmental standards, and utilizes lessons learnt from previous projects.
  • Lead process commissioning, start-up and handover to production organization.

Full-time employment, fixed salary. The planned starting date is as soon as possible. You will be based in Västerås or Skellefteå, depending on which team you join.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
