Northvolt Systems is looking for a passionate Master thesis student to join us developing a Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) for the battery systems sector. By joining us, you will be a key player in establishing a novel approach for analysing the cost and abatement potential of decarbonisation measures of battery systems. You will contribute substantially to building the greenest battery systems on the market.

About the job: You will be a part of our Systems Sustainability team whose mission is to support the development of products with a minimal environmental impact. During the thesis, you will collaborate with different teams to analyze the decarbonisation measures of our products in terms of their carbon abatement potentials and costs to help build optimized strategies. You will also be expected to build a model for your analysis that could be used in the long run. There is a possibility for a publication, if desired, on certain parts of the Master Thesis.

The following additional topics could be covered in the thesis:

  • Analysing the impact of upcoming regulations under EU FIT for 55 package such as CBAM and ETS on the evolution of the MACC.
  • Development of a similar analysis with recyclability as an indicator.
  • Additional original ideas are more than welcome

About you: You need to be an independent researcher. You like to explore multiple solutions while still prioritizing achieving the main goals. The project will require a strong drive, high curiosity, and excellent analytical thinking balanced with a practical approach to business needs.

About the team: Northvolt Systems Environmental and Sustainability team is driving and enforcing sustainability to deliver on our mission of producing the world's greenest battery systems. The team’s scope includes eco-design, life cycle assessments, recyclability assessments, end of life sustainability, supply chain sustainability, and setting standards and targets for our product development.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
