We are looking for a dedicated MSc Student to join us in our mission to contribute to a greener future. The role is a part of our passionate CAM Quality Control team based in Västerås. By joining us, you will be a key player in contributing to building one of the first large scale European battery industries with your work.

About the job
The degradation of cathode materials in Li-ion batteries is a critical issue that affects their performance and lifespan. Despite its importance, identifying the complex degradation mechanisms in Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cathodes is challenging using conventional electrochemical techniques such as charge/discharge and DCIR. This research aims to address this challenge by conducting a comprehensive electrochemical impedance study of NMC cathodes under different operating conditions.

This project will use electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a non-destructive testing method to understand the changes in the electrochemical behaviour of cathodes over time and under different temperature conditions. The analysis will be conducted by examining the distribution of relaxation times obtained from EIS data. The impact of synthesis conditions on degradation will be analysed, and a correlation between degradation mechanisms and cathode material properties will be established. Based on these findings, effective mitigation strategies will be proposed to address the degradation of NMC cathodes in Li-ion batteries in the future. This work will provide valuable insights into the degradation mechanisms of NMC cathodes, which will aid in the development of improved cathode materials and longer-lasting Li-ion batteries in the future.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design protocols for obtaining reliable and robust impedance data from coin half cells.
  • Write scripts to collect and analyse big amounts of data in an efficient way.
  • Develop procedures that allow other members of the team to streamline the impedance data analysis workflow, such as batch processing, scheduling, and automated report generation.
  • Communicate your findings regularly to different teams with multidisciplinary backgrounds.

The person we are looking for is flexible, curious and eager to learn. You will get the chance to have a real impact on our success story in Sweden (to start with) and see the results of your work. Our organization values great self-discipline and a natural talent to make things happen. Qualities that we cherish are sense of quality, friendliness, grit and a sense of humour.

About the company

Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.

To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.

Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
