  • Get Matched: Apply and get matched with a VFA startup partner in your area of interest.

  • Get Immersed: Spend 3 months in this role, during which you will be immersed in the local context, get plugged into the right networks, and get to understand market nuances.

  • Get Working: Work on real project deliverables for your assigned startup while being paid a stipend.

  • Get Hired: While full-time roles are not guaranteed, you are fast-tracked through ordinary application processes for available full-time roles with the startup after the experience.

Startup Partner:Franc

Franc is a fast-growing fintech startup currently working in the investment space. Their goal is to make investing simple, accessible and social.

They offer users access to a leading cash (money market) fund offering higher interest rate returns than a bank savings account and an equity fund that tracks the best of the stock market, targetting young, first-time investors.

The company was also voted one of the Top 5 Most Exciting Startups in SA (2022) and won Best Financial App at the MTN App of the Year Awards (2022).

Franc is a mobile-first, hybrid team and their primary distribution channels are digital, paid ads, social media, influencers and peer-to-peer referrals.

Engagement Description

Franc is looking for a Growth Lead with 4-8 years of experience who will report to the CEO. In this role, you will be responsible for the refinement and execution of the strategic plan and vision. A lot of the foundation has been set but now the team needs someone to help them really scale the business.

The role includes full accountability for further brand building, digital channels (paid and organic), creative, testing, comms, and performance marketing. Your team will be in charge of customer acquisition, the onboarding funnel and customer retention.

Deliverables

As Growth Lead you will lead, manage and develop a team dedicated to growing Franc’s customer base, ensuring a seamless experience for its prospects from first contact to investor conversion, retention and monetisation.

  • Evolving Franc’s approach to attracting, acquiring, growing and retaining customers based on a strong understanding of the customer’s needs and journey;
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams such as operations, product and others to ensure the company’s paid and owned channels are cohesive, connected and optimised;
  • Understanding what's happening within Franc’s broader business and how their marketing efforts contribute to this, gathering and sharing insights to help further shape strategy;
  • Helping to evolve the company’s thinking around performance indicators and benchmarks, working with the Analytics team to improve the fidelity and value of its performance reporting;
  • Taking full responsibility for overseeing paid media, including but not limited to -
    Facebook & Instagram Ads, Google Display Ads, Universal App Campaigns, Google Search Ads, Search engine optimization (SEO), and referral marketing;
  • Leading and setting the agenda for an ambitious and growing team, placing a high priority on people development and career growth;
  • Being an entrepreneurial growth leader, sparking ideas around new initiatives/experiments/pilots and process improvements that will accelerate growth;

Skills & Requirements

  • 4-8 years of growth or performance marketing experience in a high-growth environment, with a strong preference for experience in B2C start-ups and a proven track record.
  • Be willing to execute many deliverables yourself.
  • People management experience and a passion for developing diverse, motivated and high-performing teams.
  • Experience with managing budgets and achievement of stretch growth targets.
  • An understanding of how to optimise different acquisition channels.
  • Experience with marketing tactics and data, from search to paid social to data-driven display advertising. Knowledge of other performance marketing and lead generation channels such as affiliate marketing, email and video.
  • Proficiency with quantitative and data visualisation tools (e.g. Excel, Metabase, Data Studio, etc.) to understand and share insights that contribute to business growth.
  • Experience working with marketing measurement methods and tools, including multi-touch attribution, incrementality testing, A/B testing and beyond.
  • Excellence in project management. There will be many concurrent and high-velocity work streams. Proactive management and communication are a must.
  • Experience with website content testing. Google Analytics know-how is also helpful.
