Northvolt has an exciting job possibility for a software engineer that wants to be a part of making oil history.
You will play an important role in the commissioning and development of Europe's first battery giga-factory, which will help the transformation to a carbon free society.
About the role
As Software Engineer at Northvolt in Skellefteå you will be responsible to deliver a complete, functioning system of traceability and control for the equipment in our factory. You will work with software running on our edge gateways and in the cloud, connecting PLCs that control the machines, and the cloud-native manufacturing execution system. You will be part of a distributed team, locally present at Europe’s first home-grown battery giga-factory – in the middle of all the happening. Together with both software and other engineering teams, you will work to ensure reliable operations and bring continuous improvements and developments to Northvolt's production and commissioning processes.
During Northvolt Ett's expansion phase, your focus will include both supporting the running production as well as commissioning new equipment and production lines that are brought online. Working with central automation and software teams, as well as suppliers and factory operations, you will get an in-depth understanding of the production process and data flow in our systems. This will enable you to support with root cause analysis, maintenance, and continuous improvement of processes and software. While the job requires a foundational understanding of software and programming, your passion is focused on how software interacts with hardware and provides functionality used in the production process.
How we work
Our software is written in Go and runs on our distributed Kubernetes platform. We choose carefully which services, tools and libraries we use since we need to have long-term maintainability in mind. Because of this, we try to focus on simple solutions that we can write ourselves and if possible rely on managed services from AWS.
The whole team is ambitious about Making Oil History! and the factory run – every day a step further. We spend a large amount of our work in or around the factory, to see problems first hand that we can improve.
What we expect from you
We require some basic understanding of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, distributed systems and eventual consistency. We value passion, curiosity and willingness to learn on the job and teach you what you need to know.
You know how to explain your ideas to your peers and like to find solutions to complex problems. You are comfortable to work independently and value the support you get from the team. You are comfortable to challenge the status quo since we don’t have all the answers either.
Previous experience in industry or manufacturing is highly valued, but not required.

Fast paced & entrepreneurial culture
Northvolt makes green batteries for a blue planet. Affordable cells and high-quality battery systems. All manufactured with a record-low carbon footprint. Purposely built to provide Europe with the opportunity to switch to renewable energy – efficiently and entirely.
To accomplish this, we do things differently. We design, manufacture, and recycle everything under one roof. We even build our own factories. All this is incredibly challenging and requires us to think in unconventional ways. We’re constantly experimenting, learning and adapting to make batteries so great – they will one day make oil history.
Northvolt is growing fast. We’re staffing our international office in Stockholm, our R&D facility, Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, as well as our Gdansk facility for production of battery systems. We're also hiring for our gigafactory Northvolt Ett in Skellefteå, Sweden. We want to work with smart individuals from all disciplines. Strong individuals that truly want to make a positive impact on the future. Those of us already on board share a passion for our mission. We’re prepared to work hard in pursuit of excellence. We enjoy the ride and our main drive is to make a difference for real. As a team, we’re dedicated to thinking new, working hard and having fun.
