Patent Engineer (Chemistry/Materials)

Northvolt has an exciting job offer for a Patent Engineer with a background in Chemistry or Materials technology to join our bold IP team.

In joining us you will play an important part from the very start in building one of the first large scale European battery factories. Given the timing of you joining Northvolt and the early stage the company is in, you will be given a unique opportunity to have great impact in the development of a new company and industry in Sweden.

You will be a part of building Northvolt’s IP function and will support and advise different teams throughout the company in all kinds of IP matters. The initial scope of the role will depend on your background and experience level, but will likely include:

  • Driving freedom-to-operate investigations and evaluating the results; performing novelty searches, landscaping, and other IP intelligence work;
  • Managing inventions throughout their life cycle, including idea harvesting and analysis, and drafting and prosecution of patent applications;
  • Overseeing the work of outside counsel in various jurisdictions;
  • Participating in developing our IP strategy and work processes.

Skills & Requirements

Education/Experience

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Materials technology, coupled with an interest in working broadly with the different technical areas involved in battery manufacturing and recycling
  • At least 3 years of experience as a Patent Engineer / Patent Attorney / IP Manager OR as a patent search specialist / IP analyst
  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of Swedish, Korean and/or Japanese would be an asset.

The person we are looking for is a self-starter with excellent communication skills, a curious mind, and a willingness to take on a variety of different tasks and projects in a diverse, fast-paced environment. You will get the chance to have a real impact on our success story in Sweden (to start with) and see the results of your work. The position can be based in Västerås or Stockholm (with 2-3 days a week travel to our R&D site in Västerås).
