Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) is seeking candidates with a passion for teaching for a one-year assignment teaching and mentoring talented African entrepreneur’s software development fundamentals. We're looking for:

  • Technology Teaching Fellows (start in December 2017 and August 2018)
  • A Communication Teaching Fellow (start in August 2018)
  • A Business Teaching Fellow (start in August 2018)

Skills & Requirements

As a TECHNOLOGY TEACHING FELLOW, you have:

  • Strong background in technology and/or entrepreneurship
  • Skills in either front-end or backend full- stack development.
  • If you have worked with previous startups and know agility, it’s a huge additional bonus!

_In more detail, you have: _

  • Programming proficiency in an objected-oriented programming (OOP) language.
  • Experience building scalable applications:

    • UX/UI Designer: Wireframing, Prototyping, Ideating, developing final designs using Photoshop/Illustrator, etc.

    • Front-End: Exposure and practical skills of one of the popular frontend frameworks such as Ember.js, Angular, React, Backbone, etc.

    • Back-End: Daily development of one of the popular full stack frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Django, Meteor, Laravel, etc. Experience in both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, etc) and non-relational databases (MongoDB, Redis, etc). If you have BAAS experience, that’s a plus.

    • Mobile application developer. If you do native development with Java (Android) or Objective-C/Swift (iOS) that’s a plus.

    • Documentation and Testing

  • Ability to design and architect complex software programs, and maintain them over time.

  • Experience managing software projects and teams using project management tools.

  • Ability to adopt new languages and frameworks quickly in order to help teams using them.
  • Interest and/or passion for teaching and technology; experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team, and to deal with ambiguity.
  • Good verbal and written communication in English; good presentation skills.
  • We also encourage people with network and system administration experience to apply.

You'll be working on:

  • Be part of the faculty and actively participate in the daily training of MEST students
  • Prepare high-quality lecture content and research current trends to introduce to our Entrepreneurs-in-Training
  • Engage in subjects such as Design Thinking and UI / UX, Front-End Views (HTML + CSS), front-end frameworks and back-end frameworks with knowledge about both SQL and NOSQL databases
  • Challenge our entrepreneurs, and push them to stretch their limits.
  • Tutor the students 1-1 in programming fundaments
  • Prepare students for the global business world by becoming a mentor and positive role model
  • During mentoring sessions while entrepreneurs work on live problems in their project periods, you help ideate and choose appropriate technologies for developing their products.

At MEST, we concentrate on building scalable solutions in terms of both design and tech. Technologies range from programming languages, algorithms, databases, application frameworks to project management tools and development methodologies.

As a COMMUNICATION TEACHING FELLOW, you have:

  • Strong background in professional communications
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business, or a related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of how to build a personal and/or company brand
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to successfully apply various forms of communication - verbal and nonverbal, traditional and new media digital - skills in a professional environment
  • Cross-cultural communication experience with emerging & developed markets
  • Experience coaching and managing using various people development methodologies and techniques
  • Passion for training and mentoring young people and a pro-active energy
  • Knowledge of time management and project management concepts
  • Understanding of business management and startup - sales and marketing concepts such as customer acquisition, customer engagement and customer support and success
  • Experience in great storytelling techniques and delivering professional standard presentations
  • Ability to apply logic and critical thinking to problem solving
  • High-level English language skills; written and verbal
  • Start-up experience in communications & business development is a plus.

You'll be working on:

  • Support MEST trainees in developing their entrepreneurial and global business skills. They work in dynamic teams with other fellows from around the world, led by a faculty with significant software and business experience.
  • Be part of the faculty and actively participate in the daily training of MEST trainees
  • Personally take attendance and monitor standards while ensuring reliability, commitment and good rapport with EITs
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to trainees
  • Help determine topics and requirements for project assignments
  • Grade and evaluate deliverables and provide constructive feedback
  • Be an ambassador for MEST brand, companies and programmes internally and externally
  • Provide personal mentorship to a dedicated group of students
  • Support students to communicate their ideas, skills and outcomes effectively while learning and building their companies
  • Prepare students for the global business world by becoming a mentor and a positive role model

As a BUSINESS TEACHING FELLOW, you have:

  • Strong background in business and/or entrepreneurship
  • Bachelor's degree in the liberal arts, business, finance, and/or entrepreneurship
  • Startup experience and a good understanding of overall startup operations
  • Experience applying lean startup principles (build, measure, learn)
  • Experience with financial accounting, financial modelling, unit economics, metrics and key performance indicators
  • Experience with project management and work planning
  • Understanding of product management, digital marketing, customer discovery and customer acquisition
  • Demonstrated interest in technology and emerging business models
  • Knowledge of brainstorming techniques and business idea generation and validation
  • Good verbal and written communication in English; good presentation skills
  • Experience in sales and/or marketing

You'll be working on:

  • Support MEST Trainees in developing their entrepreneurial and global business skills. They work in dynamic teams with other fellows from around the world, which are led by Faculty that have significant software and business experience.
  • Be part of the faculty and design the curriculum
  • Prepare and deliver lectures
  • Help determine topics and requirements for project assignments
  • Grade and evaluate deliverables
  • Tutor students one on one and consult emerging startups at MEST
  • Develop and execute revenue-generating initiatives for MEST
  • Prepare students for the global business world by becoming a mentor and positive role model

Founded in 2008, The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) is a training program, seed fund and incubator established by Meltwater with the goal of equipping high potential young Africans with the skills required to launch globally successful software companies, enabling them to create jobs and wealth locally to stimulate economic growth across the African economy.

Every year, aspiring entrepreneurs with a strong interest in technology & entrepreneurship from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire apply and compete for 60 open spots at the program.

Since its inception, MEST has invested over $15 million training 400+ individual entrepreneurs and over 40 tech companies have been launched via seed funding and mentorship from MEST.

Established in Ghana in 2008, MEST offers aspiring African entrepreneurs a fully sponsored twelve month, intensive full-time program. Sourced from Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and the Ivory Coast, these Entrepreneurs-In-Training (EITs) are selected each year and receive comprehensive training across the spectrum of skills required to build successful tech businesses, including computer programming, software development, product management, finance, marketing, sales and leadership best practices.

After completion of the program, the EITs have the opportunity to pitch a concept. Winning teams receive a seed round from the MEST Incubator to pursue their idea.
