Senior Marketing & Communications Lead

We’re looking for a stellar senior marketing and communications expert to help lead the MarComms team and tell the world about MEST! Critical to this role will be raising awareness about the MEST program, creating well-researched reports about the African tech landscape, managing our social communities and creating regular content that highlights the achievements of our students, portfolio companies and staff, as well as innovations in the wider African tech community.

This experienced professional will be a phenomenal writer, no stranger to research and a people person ready to dive into our exciting and engaging community. He or she will lead our marketing and communications efforts, with an eye to our Pan-African presence and global reach. A core responsibility will be overseeing all owned media, including the blog, newsletters, website and social, and working with the Marketing & Recruitment Lead to continue to add to our existing assets.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

Community Engagement (Social Media)

  • Take ownership over our international MEST social media communities, including Facebook, Twitter Instagram and Youtube, with an ability to speak to each unique audience. Social media is a key point of communication for students, prospects, alumni and fans of MEST, and we expect this person to nurture and grow our channels, while demonstrating MEST’s unique voice and culture

  • May include social media advertising, participation in local or international events on behalf of MEST

Community Engagement (Social Media)

  • This person will also be responsible for maintaining a positive internal community within MEST, including EITs, incubator companies, staff and alumni

  • Includes facilitating conversation between the MEST training program and incubator, keeping staff and community members informed and maintaining a streamlined flow of communications

Owned media

  • Own the meltwater.org site, including updates where needed and regular blog contributions

  • SEO & SEM best practices

Content development

  • This is where you shine! We need a passionate writer to help us bring the MEST story to life, including blog posts, interviews, newsletters, images, industry reports, white papers and more

    • Highlight our students, alumni, portfolio companies and staff and their achievements

    • Work with EITs and staff to generate contributed pieces

    • Regularly report on news and events happening at MEST

    • Work with the press who attend our events to ensure MEST continues to get coverage

    • Produce weekly MEST internal and monthly external newsletter to help us share updates with our network

    • Offer regular updates to partners, investors, guest lectures and more

    • Maintain internal community portal to keep the entire MEST community informed

    • Create a series of industry reports to highlight our thought leadership within the African technology community

PRESS & MEDIA RELATIONS

  • Track all mentions around MEST and portfolio companies and update internally and on website

  • Write press releases for announcements and ensure distribution among appropriate media contacts

  • Develop relationships with key influencers and members of the media in MEST countries, and nurture those relationships

  • Work with Marketing & Recruitment head to create and maintain relationships with local and international press contacts as part of MEST ambassador program

  • Work with the team to cover logistics for all MEST-hosted events; continually post on social media throughout events

  • A strong communicator and writer who is excited to spread the word about MEST and our mission, and positively represent the brand

  • Proactive. you take initiative and continually present new ideas that will make our brand stronger

  • A strong writer and researcher who has experience building top quality content

  • Internationally minded. Our program accepts students from across Sub-Saharan Africa, so you’ll need to understand the nuances of different cultures and mindsets

  • Highly organized. You can own our assets and proactively create new ones where needed

  • Familiar with Mailchimp, Wordpress and Google docs, as well as with Google analytics and SEO best practices

  • An experienced social media community manager

  • Familiar with the press world and understands how to engage with journalists and publications to help us form more meaningful relationships

  • Enthusiastic about working in a technology hub or incubator, with an understanding of the African tech startup space
