Data Foundations is the central department within Schibsted working to empower our businesses to deliver value by leveraging data - always with our users' best interest at heart. Our data platform ingests 1 TB of data daily from all of Schibsted's web and native applications, and our products are used within the company for machine learning, analytics, personalization, segmentation, and advertisement.

As a frontend engineer across Data Foundations, you will be part of ambitious, diverse, and empowered teams, which develop products for all the ​​Schibsted brands and Schibsted Marketing Services (our ads sales department). Our vision is for Schibsted to be able to: "move from data to impact across the ecosystem in a day", which is done by executing our mission: "provide Schibsted with the foundation for data capture, enrichment, and activation".

Your main responsibilities

You will play a key role within Data Foundations together with other frontend and software engineers, in empowering the Schibsted family to leverage data, with user-friendly products.

The products you'll be working on

  • “Pulse” is a suite of state-of-the-art fully-featured end-to-end data collection (mobile apps and websites), streaming, transformation, and storage services

  • “ATE (Audience Target Engine)” is a data management platform developed and owned by Schibsted. It allows our brands to create segments of users based on data from all Schibsted brands

As part of your daily work, you'll be

  • Developing and maintaining user-friendly and engaging products for our internal customers: software engineers, data engineers, data scientists, data analysts, and ads campaign managers, across Schibsted

  • Promoting sound engineering practices and helping to drive technical strategy and roadmaps

  • Taking an active role to drive architectural decisions, sharing knowledge, and collaborating across Schibsted teams to figure out how we can provide the best possible platform for our users. This role requires autonomy and a willingness to figure out together with our engineers, product manager, and product designer what our end users need

  • A part of a multi-functional team of different domain specialists (incl. product management and UX design) working closely with other teams across our department and Schibsted (News Media, Nordic Marketplaces, Venture companies, and Advertisement)

Our tech stack

  • Our main programming languages are Typescript , Javascript , Scala, Kotlin, Java, and Swift. The frontend is based on React , Material-ui , and Node.js API

  • Our infrastructure is mainly built inAWS (S3, Cloudfront, Cloudformation, Route53, some EC2, dynamo DB, ALB, PostgreSQL), Kubernetes, Aiven, Datadog, Humio, Spinnaker, Travis, Artifactory, and Github. For data analytics and streaming, we use e.g. AWS, Aiven, Spark, AWS Lambda, and Kafka

  • Have proven and extended experience in tackling complex technical problems, and balancing between business deliveries and technical improvements

  • Have a "can-do-attitude", meaning curious, willing to deal with problems, investigate unclarities, learn new technologies (including parts of our ecosystem)

  • Understand and care about the importance of creating a well-documented and tested frontend for software services

Your Skills & Experience

  • You have a strong proficiency in modern JavaScript, CSS, HTML, applied to a React/Typescript ecosystem

  • You are experienced in working with data from a variety of storage technologies (like PostgreSQL and DynamoDB)

  • You have good knowledge of architecture and design (patterns, reliability, scalability, quality) of microservices and cloud infrastructure

  • You are comfortable with deploying and operating services in a cloud environment

  • Extended experience in engineering and implementing reliable, simple, and intuitive frontends

  • You have a proven track record of gathering and interpreting requirements, solving challenging technical problems, and learning new technologies and code practices

  • Strong communication skills both written and oral, and a great team spirit

It's an advantage if you have

  • Experience with any of the following areas: AWS, Kubernetes, and large-scale data pipelines.

  • Interest in Big Data and would like to develop yourself in the Data Engineering area.

  • Experience with developing and maintaining JavaScript/TypeScript SDK or library code for real users (e.g. open source projects).

  • An interest in DX (Developer Experience) – how do we make better products by helping other developers?

  • A passion for metrics, monitoring, and code "transparency"

Our Interview Process

  • Recruiter screening (30 min): An initial call with the tech recruiter. We'll tell you a bit about us, answer any questions you may have, and learn about your background and what you're looking to do

  • Home assessment and code review, or a live coding interview (60 min): a take-home exercise (preferably in Typescript) with a follow-up discussion where you meet two of our engineers or a live refactoring coding interview

  • System design interview (60 min): System Design interview and potentially some computer science fundamentals discussions

  • Values interview (45 min): meeting the Engineering Manager and Product Manager focusing on your previous experiences as a teammate in various situations
